U. C. Vikings Baffle Bulldogs, 154, 159
The eighthranked Union Catholic High School girls volleyball team baffled the Bulldogs from Jonathan Dayton, 154, 159, in Springfield on October 12. The Vikings boosted their record to 131.
Jennifer Monroy notched nine kills, had eight service points and made two blocks. Linda Dolansky hammered eight kills and had two blocks.
Again the WHS defense forced a thirdandshort situation, and the Devils packed the middle, expecting a quarterback sneak or fullback Kenny Lewis up the middle. Instead, Booker broke free toward the Union sideline and raced 47 yards for a touchdown.
After several punts and a missed Union field goal, Tranchina again reached into his bag of tricks. With just over four minutes left and facing with a fourthand1 at the Westfield 29, the Devils lined up for a punt. But snapper Mike Toth hiked the ball to upblocker Mercer, who dashed forward five yards before fumbling. Union recovered at the 33 and settled for another field goal by Andriola, who nailed a school record 45yard kick with 1: 54 left for the final points.
Westfield wasn’t finished yet. On the ensuing kickoff, Matt Daly had a 34yard return the Westfield 46. MacDonald entered the game and quickly found Jim McKeon for 42 yards to the Union 12. But two sacks and an intentional grounding penalty put WHS in a fourthand38 hole. MacDonald connected with McKeon for 20 of the those yards, but fell short of a first down and the game ended one “knee” later.
The Blue Devils were limited to just 54 yards rushing but did have 97 yards through the air. Andzell finished with 16 tackles, followed by King and Mroz with 12 each, Brinkman with 11 and Dodge with eight.

ALEXIS ANZELONE BECOMES 2ND ONLY TO ‘BEST’
Blue Devil XC ‘Pac’ ‘Bests’ Cougars and Blue Knights By DAVID B. CORBIN
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
“Personal Best” (PB) were the words shouted for 21 of the Westfield High School girls cross country “Pac” when they crossed the finish line en route to 1550 wins over Cranford and Irvington on the 3.0mile course at Tamaques Park in Westfield on October 12. The Devils swept all seven of the top spots and all were personal best times.
Collectively, those seven top times averaged to be the fastest recorded by any Westfield High School girls’ team in a single meet. And all seven placed in the WHS alltime top20. Heading the list was senior Alexis Anzelone, who placed herself second on the WHS alltime list with a spectacular time of 18: 55 behind Cindy Best – that’s right! – Best, who recorded a time of 18: 10 in 1982.
“Lexie’s time was great! And our intention (as a team) was to run against the clock and to prepare for the more rigorous upcoming meets,” explained Blue Devil Head Coach Tom Hornish.
“Given the momentum we had from the Shore Coaches (Westfield placed first) which has a more hilly course, we wanted to improve our speed on the flatter courses like Warinanco (Roselle),” said Hornish. “We have the Conference, Sectionals and Counties coming up there.”
Kyle Legones crossed behind Anzelone with a time of 19: 35 which placed her sixth on the WHS list. Rachel Ackerman placed third at 19: 46, 11th on the WHS list, and Sarah Mahran’s fourthplace time of 19: 55 placed her 12th on the WHS list. Freshman Carolyn Harbaugh took fifth with a time of 20: 01 and
positioned herself 14th on the WHS list. Jackie Cusimano crossed just a second later to place her name 15th on the WHS list. Erin McClellan placed herself 19th on the WHS list with a seventhplace time of 20: 19.
All of the times were particularly low because the course at Tamaques is one tenth of a mile shorter than Warinanco, but averaging in the extra length, the times were still impressive.
“They all ran super, but if you look at the front five average time, that puts us right up there with Hunterdon Central and close to the topthree,” pointed out Hornish.
But 14 more PB’s were to be recorded by the Blue Devil “Pac”. Finishing 10th in the race was Margaret Brautigam at 20: 58. Theresa Murphy
crossed 11th at 21: 05, Carolyn Matthews took 13th with a time of 21: 20, Martta McGlynn was 14th at 21: 23 and Sarah Ackerman was 15th at 21: 43.
Other PB times were recorded by Ali Fetissoff at 22: 14, Michele Madorma at 22: 15, Melissa Richey at 22: 48, Marty Tracey at 22: 52 and Liz Salemme, Tyne Duffy, Rachel Moloshok and Erin Cochren.
“Perhaps the euphoria from the Shore Coaches gives teams that extra momentum,” commented Hornish. “Very impressive. I’m amazed.”
The double victory set Westfield’s regular season winning streak at 66. The Blue Devil boys and girls will compete at the Watchung Conference Tournament tomorrow at Warinanco, beginning at 3: 15. Farmers Blank

L. CARAVELLO SETS WHS RECORD
Devil Gymnasts Score State’s Highest Total
Records were set by Westfield High School gymnast Lauren Caravello as she led the Blue Devils, who swept the topthree scores in every event, to a 109.2595.6 victory over hosting Old Bridge on October 15. The Blue Devils’ team total was the highest in New Jersey to date and Caravello’s allaround total of 37.6 became the highest in WHS history.
Lauren placed first in every event and broke another WHS record by scoring a 9.6 on the floor exercises. Her balance beam score was 9.55 and her totals on the uneven bars and vault were 9.4 and 9.075, respectively.
Jessica Caravello finished second in the allaround with a total of 35.9
but would have scored a WHS record on the beam if it were not for a 0.5 deduction for a fall which placed her second at 9.2. She also placed third on the floor and the unevens with respective marks of 9.1 and 8.9. Her vault score was 8.7.
Kristen Valla, competing in three events, placed second on the floor, unevens and vault with respective scores of 9.3, 8.95 and 8.9. the final whistle blew. Westfield stood at 581 and the Raiders at 1011.
After the game, Raider coach Breznitsky spoke candidly about the controversial call. “Quality referees do not make those calls. The kids were robbed today by the officiating. It’s a shame. We dominated them (Westfield) 90 percent of the match.”
Coach George Kapner of Westfield had kinder words for the officiating as he said, “I had no problem with the refs. We are a high school team; with high school playing, coaching, and refereeing, and that’s fine.”
In regards to the game, Coach Kapner commented, “We played exceptionally well today. We didn’t score goals, but we experimented with a lot of different players and seemed to have found an answer that works.”
