James B. Totten

James B. Totten of Shrewsbury, Mass., died on Sunday, October 15, at his home.

Born in Westfield, the son of Earl and Edith Crehore Totten, he had lived in Shrewsbury for eight years.

Mr. Totten had been a social worker at Olympus Specialty Hospital in Waltham for seven years before his retirement. He previously worked at the former Cushing Hospital in Framingham for many years.

A graduate of St. Andrew’s Academy in Delaware and Amherst College in Amherst, Mass., he received graduate degrees in theater and social work from Boston University.

Mr. Totten was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Attleboro, Mass. He was also a member of the National Association of Social Workers.

He performed in summer stock theater at Cape Cod’s Falmouth Playhouse and the Community Theater of Walpole.

He was a United States Army veteran. Surviving are his wife of seven years, Tina Gianakis Totten; a son, James B. Totten, Jr. of Brooklyn; two daughters, Melissa Totten of California and Jennifer Totten of North Carolina, and a sister, Jean Totten of Rhode Island.

Visitation will be held at the Robert J. McNally Funeral Home in Clinton, Mass. from 5 to 8 p. m. today, Thursday, October 19.

A memorial service will be held in the Second Congregational Church of Attleboro at a later date. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Angel Fund for Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Massachusetts General Hospital, 55 Fruit Street, Boston, Mass., 02114.

Drusilla Christopher, 95, Purchasing Agent Was Active With Various Organizations

Michael McCauley, 44

Michael McCauley, 44, of Bedminster died on Monday, October 16, at his home.

Born in Baltimore, he was raised in Scotch Plains and had lived in Cranford before relocating to Bedminster in 1994.

Mr. McCauley was a pharmacist with St. Barnabas and Morristown Memorial Hospitals and Greyrock Pharmacy in Clinton. He recently began a yearlong program at the Chubb Institute to expand his career horizons into the area of technology and web design.

He was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.

He was predeceased by his parents, Donald McCauley, in 1992, and Dorothy McCauley, in 1993.

Surviving are three brothers, James McCauley, Donald McCauley and John McCauley, and four sisters, Monica McCauley, Joan Fenwick, Victoria Meeks and Laura Mazzaferro.

The funeral will be held tomorrow, Friday, October 20, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a Mass at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. Interment will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p. m. and from 7 to 9 p. m. today, Thursday, October 19, at the funeral home.

Hope Lee, 82, Was Executive Director Of WestfieldMountainside Red Cross

Raymond J. Powell, 49

Raymond J. Powell, 49, of North Plainfield died on Monday, October 16, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Newark, he moved to Garwood in 1954 and then to North Plainfield 16 years ago.

Mr. Powell had been employed as a service manager for the Porcelli GMC Trucking Company in Elizabeth for 20 years before going into selfemployed semiretirement 10 years ago.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Powell; two sons, Raymond Powell of Garwood and Adam Powell of North Plainfield; a daughter, Amanda Powell of North Plainfield; his parents, Claude and Lorraine Powell of Edison; a brother, Garry Powell of Garwood, and five grandchildren.

A Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, October 18, at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Garwood.

Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

William R. Hannon, 73, Navy Veteran Was Former Fanwood Police Officer

Donald H. Bagger, 74, Had Served On Town Council and School Board

Donald H. Bagger of Mountainside, who was active in Westfield civic affairs for more than 50 years, died on Tuesday, October 10, at home.

Born in Westfield, he had lived in Mountainside for eight years.

Mr. Bagger had worked for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where he held positions in public affairs, communications and international protocol responsibilities during the course of a 20year career.

He was also the first Executive Director of the Newark Economic Development Corporation. Early in his career, he had served as Secretary of the Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce and was on the staff of

New Jersey Governor Alfred Driscoll. Mr. Bagger formerly served on the Westfield Town Council and the Westfield Board of Education, as well as the Charter Study Commission that led to the granting of Westfield’s special municipal charter by the State Legislature.

After retiring from the Port Authority, Mr. Bagger was appointed as Mountainside Borough Administrator and later Business Manager of the WardlawHartridge School in Edison.

In addition, he served as Westfield’s Fire Commissioner, President of the Westfield Local Assistance Board and as a member of the New Jersey Real Estate Commission.

He was also a Director of the Westfield Adult School and of the Westfield College Men’s Club and was a Trustee of the Westfield Community Relations Council.

Mr. Bagger graduated from Harvard University in 1948 and from the Federal Executive Institute in 1971.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He was predeceased by a brother, N. Bruce Bagger.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Bagger; a daughter, Paula Bagger of Hingham, Mass.; three sons, Jonathan Bagger of Baltimore, Richard Bagger of Westfield and Matthew Bagger of New York City; a sister, Doris B. Marsh of Marblehead, Mass., and eight grandchildren.

Services will be held at noon on Saturday, October 21, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield.

Arrangements are being handled by the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Donald H. Bagger Memorial Fund of the Westfield Foundation.

William R. Hannon, 73, of Green Brook died on Tuesday, October 10, at home.

Born in Somerville, he moved to Fanwood many years ago.

Mr. Hannon had been a Fanwood police officer for 26 years before retiring in 1980. Promoted to Sergeant in 1968, he completed numer ous inservice training schools and

was one of the department’s official photographers.

Previously, he was a tower man with the Central Railroad of New Jersey.

Mr. Hannon served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the Fanwood Volunteer Fire Company and the Policeman’s Benevolent Association Local No. 123 in Fanwood.

Surviving are two daughters, Jill Aller and Tracee Hannon; two brothers, Frank Hannon and Vincent Hannon, and three grandchildren.

Services were held on Saturday, October 14, at St. Joseph’s Church in North Plainfield.

Arrangements were handled by the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.

Drusilla May Macaulay Christopher, 95, of Melbourne, Fla. died on Friday, August 4, at home.

Born and raised in Scotch Plains, she was the daughter of the late Samuel B. and Augusta Jaeger Macaulay. She had lived in Fanwood from 1931 to 1969, when she relocated to Sebastian, Fla. She moved to Melbourne in 1989.

Mrs. Christopher retired in 1966 as Purchasing Agent of the J. D. Loizeaux Lumber Company in Plainfield, where she had been employed for over 30 years.

She served as President of the Fanwood Women’s Club, the Garden Club and the Parent Teacher Association of the former School 4 and was Commissioner of the Fanwood Girl Scout Council.

Mrs. Christopher was also active with the Philathalians, the Westfield

Weavers and the New Jersey Orchid Society and was a former member of the Scotch Plains Baptist Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold N. Christopher, Sr., in 1995.

Surviving are a daughter, Drusilla C. McNair of Mendham Township; a son, Harold N. Christopher of North Wolfeboro, N. H. and three grandchildren.

A graveside service, with burial of the cremains, will take place at 11: 30 a. m. on Thursday, October 26, in the cemetery of the Scotch Plains Baptist Church.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Beach Funeral Home in Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.

Hope Gallaway Lee, 82, of Westfield died on Monday, October 16, at the home of her daughter, Nancy Lee Rice, in Arden, N. C.

Born in Malone, N. Y., she had lived in Westfield for many years.

Mrs. Lee had been employed as a registered nurse prior to her retirement.

She had also served as an Executive Director of the WestfieldMountainside Area Chapter of the American Red Cross and volunteered at Overlook Hospital in Summit.

She was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield.

Also surviving are another daughter, Mary Lee Andrews of Jacobus, Pa., 11 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a. m. on Monday, October 23, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield. Interment will follow in St. Paul’s Garth.

Arrangements are being handled by the Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden, N. C.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Organ Fund, 414 East Broad Street, Westfield, 07090.

Anna Mandaglio, 76

Anna Mandaglio, 76, of North Plainfield died on Tuesday, October 3.

Born in the Netherwood section of Plainfield, she had lived there until relocating to North Plainfield in 1951.

Mrs. Mandaglio had been employed as a legal secretary for the firm of Johnstone Skok, Loughlin and Lane in Westfield for the past 19 years.

Surviving are her husband, Vincent Mandaglio; three sons, Bart Mandaglio of Mendham Township, James Mandaglio of Annandale and Michael Mandaglio of Gillette; a daughter, Roseann Messina of Flemington; her brother, Joseph Comune of Middlesex, and seven grandchildren.

Services were held on Tuesday, October 17, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung, followed by a Mass at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in North Plainfield. Interment took place at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.

Agnes Pasko, 90

Agnes Pasko, 90, of Davenport, Fla., died on Wednesday, October 11, at the Florida home of her daughter, Judith Mammano.

Born in Middleport, Pa., she had lived in Fanwood and Elizabeth before relocating to Florida in 1976.

She was a member of the Fanwood Volunteer Rescue Squad for 14 years.

Also surviving are four sons, Robert Pasko, Richard Pasko, James Pasko and Thomas Pasko; another daughter, Carol Brown; a sister, Patricia Spital; 13 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Monday, October 16, at St. Genevieve’s Roman Catholic Church in Elizabeth. Interment took place at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.

Neva Smith, 93

Neva Smith, 93, of Westfield died on Sunday, October 8, in the Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network in Westfield.

Born in King William County, Va., she moved to Westfield many years ago.

Ms. Smith had been employed at Jane Smith in Westfield for 18 years before retiring.

She was a member of the Women’s Fellowship and the Usher Board, both of the Bethel Baptist Church in Westfield.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary E. Moore and Helen M. Moore; a sister, Hazel Peterson, and two brothers, Preston Smith and James Smith.

Services were held on Friday, October 13, at the Bethel Baptist Church. Arrangements were handled by the PlintonCurry Funeral Home in Westfield.

Jill Elizabeth Riley, 37

Jill Elizabeth Riley, 37, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, October 12, at home.

Born in North Plainfield, she resided in Scotch Plains for the past 10 years.

Mrs. Riley had worked at the Cranford Library for three years. Prior to that, she had worked at the Nutley Library.

She attended Penn State University and received a bachelor’s degree in English from Montclair State College in 1985. Mrs. Riley earned a master’s degree in library science from Rutgers University in 1986.

Surviving are her husband, Christopher R. Riley; a son, Steven Albert Riley; her parents, Nina and Eugene Bereza, and a brother, John Bereza.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities, Maternity and Adoptive Services, 288 Rues Lane, East Brunswick, 08816.

Matthew J. Ponzio, 85

Matthew J. Ponzio, 85, of Bedminster died on Monday, October, 9, at the Integrated Health Services in Bound Brook.

Born in Scotch Plains, he had lived in Manahawkin before moving to Bedminster two years ago.

Mr. Ponzio had been a machinist for 18 years with Thul Machinery in Plainfield before retiring in 1980.

He was a member of the Senior Social Club in Manahawkin.

Surviving are a daughter, Pam Ostrander; a son, Ronald J. Ponzio, Sr.; nine grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.

Services were held on Friday, October 13, at the Sheenan Funeral Home in Dunellen.

Angeline B. Wagner, 82

Angeline B. Wagner, 82, a lifelong resident of Scotch Plains, died on Saturday, October 14, at home.

Mrs. Wagner had worked for the Singer Company in Somerville for more than 40 years before retiring in 1988.

She was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.

Mrs. Wagner also was a member of the Catholic Golden Agers and the Senior Citizens, both of Scotch Plains, and an auxiliary member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10122 of Scotch Plains.

Surviving are a sister, Mary Di Fiore, and a brother, Rocco Di Fiore.

A Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, October 18, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church.

Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman will do a fundraiser for Mrs. Connelly today from 1 to 3 p. m. at a private home in Short Hills.

Congressman Patrick Kennedy (DR. I.) came to New Jersey in August to promote Mrs. Connelly’s candidacy.

Senator John McCain attended a rally in Union October 7 for Mr. Ferguson.

A visit by former Transportation and Labor Secretary Elizabeth Dole, wife of 1996 GOP Presidential nominee Bob Dole, for Mr. Ferguson is on hold. Visits are being planned by Congressman J. C. Watts (ROkla.4th) and Congresswoman Sue Kelly (RN. Y.19th), Chairwoman of the General Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the Banking and Finance Committee.

In her latest Federal Election Commission filing, Mrs. Connelly reported that she raised $1.5 million for her campaign and has $138,000 in cash on hand. Mr. Ferguson reported having raised $864,000 for the General Election, with $329,000 in cash on hand.

Given that the Seventh District seat is open this year and that Democrats have not won it in recent memory, Congressman Gephardt said he sees the election as a fiercely contested race that will go down to the wire.

“We think we have the candidate and the issues to win,” he said.

James H. Brown, 77, WWII Vet Owned Taxi Service in Westfield

James Harding Brown, 77, of East Orange, died on Monday, October 2 in the Department of Veterans Affairs, New Jersey Health Care Center at East Orange.

Born in Westfield, he lived in Plainfield before moving to East Orange many years ago.

Mr. Brown was a truck driver with ABC Trucking Co. for many years before retiring. Earlier, he owned a taxi business in Westfield.

During World War II, he served in the Army’s “Red Ball Express” as a truck driver hauling ammunition and gasoline for General Patton’s army in Europe and was a part of the DDay followup forces.

Mr. Brown was a member of Inter national Brotherhood of Teamsters

Union Local 478 and Elks Westfield Centennial Lodge 400.

Surviving are a son, James A. Brown, and brothers, Charles Brown, Lawrence Wallace Brown and Douglas Brown.

Services were held on Monday, October 9, at the Plinton Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.

Dorothy Johnson, 78

Dorothy Johnson, 78, of Raleigh, N. C., died on Monday, October 2, at home.

Born in Hazlehurst, Miss., Mrs. Johnson lived in Westfield for 35 years and Plainfield for 40 years before moving to Raleigh in 1998.

Mrs. Johnson had worked for the Burroughs Corporation in Piscataway for 10 years and also as a private duty nurse for various families in the Westfield/ Plainfield area before retiring in 1992.

She sang in the choir at St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Westfield.

Surviving are a son, Donald Sumner; four daughters, Barbara MinerBrown, Brenda Muhammad, Robin Brown and Cheryle Jones; 14 grandchildren and 20 greatgrandchildren.

Services were held on Saturday, October 7 at the Covenant United Methodist Church in Plainfield.

Arrangements were handled by the PlintonCurry Funeral Home in Westfield.

Republican Club Of Mountainside Plans Dinner Dance

MOUNTAINSIDE – The Republican Club of Mountainside will host their Annual Dinner Dance on Friday, October 27, at 7 p. m. at L’Affaire on Route 22, East in Mountainside.

The evening of food, fun, music and fellowship will include a cocktail hour and hors d’oeuvres from 7 to 8 p. m., followed by a filet mignon and chicken picata dinner. An open bar will be featured from 7 to 11 p. m.

Willie Thompson, 86

Willie Mae Thompson, 86, of Neshanic Station, died Saturday, October 7 in Somerset Medical Center, Somerville.

Born in Louisiana, she lived in Los Angeles and Scotch Plains before moving to Neshanic Station five years ago.

Surviving are a daughter, Lillie Jean Laws; two sons, Beverly Charles Thompson Jr. and Reginald Nicholas; a brother, Joseph Lecour; four sisters, Theresa Pryor, Mary Huff, Nora Taylor and Daisy Bryant; six grandchildren, 10 greatgrandchildren and two greatgreatgrandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Thompson, were held on Tuesday, October 10 at the Hillsborough Funeral Home in Belle Mead.

M. Claire Lodge, 80, of Scotch Plains, died on Saturday, October 7, at home.

Born in Orange, she lived in Montclair before moving to Scotch Plains in 1960.

She was a bookkeeper for LeBoeuf Cleaners for 40 years before retiring in 1992.

She was a member of the Ramblers of the United Methodist Church in Plainfield.

A Mass was offered on Tuesday at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Edward Walsh, 85

Edward J. Walsh, Jr, 85, of Southampton, Pa., died on Saturday, October 7, at home.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., he lived in Warminster, Pa. and Westfield before moving to Southampton 12 years ago.

Mr. Walsh, was the plant superintendent for Alloy Steel Casting Co., Elizabeth, where he worked for 20 years before retiring in 1984. Previously, he was employed by FisherPorter, Southampton, and by the American Steel Foundry, Newark.

He was a member of the Red Lion Golf Club and was a former Little League baseball coach and umpire, as well as a basketball coach.

Surviving his wife of 59 years, Margaret Walsh; a son, Edward J. Walsh 3rd; a daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Z. Huckins; a sister, Mrs. Helen M. Jenkins; three grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Tuesday, October 10, at St. Mary of the Lakes Church in Medford.

Arrangements were handled by the Mathis Funeral Home in Medford.
