Betty F. Whitney, 85

Betty F. Fish Whitney, 85, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, died on Wednesday, November 8, at Kethley House in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was a resident for several weeks.

Born in Cleveland on March 27, 1915, she had lived in Westfield from 1952 to 1972.

She attended Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio after high school.

She was predeceased by her husband, Franklyn Whitney, and by a sister, Janet Fish Brown.

Surviving are two sons, John R. Whitney of Lincolnshire, Ill. and Richard B. Whitney of Shaker Heights, Ohio; a daughter, Janet L. Whitney of Key Biscayne, Fla.; a brother, Dr. John S. Fish of Atlanta, Ga., and six grandchildren.

Private services and burial were held at the Mapleshade Cemetery in Auburn Township, Ohio.

Arrangements were under the direction of the StroudLawrence Funeral Home in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 East 185th Street, Cleveland, Ohio, 44119.

Amelia M. Knox

Amelia M. Semon Knox of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, November 11, at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison.

Born in Newark, she had lived there until moving to Scotch Plains 13 years ago.

Mrs. Knox had been the Executive Secretary to the Vice President of the PSE& G Company in Newark during the 1940s, later becoming a homemaker.

She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains and of the Catholic Daughters of America, where she served as the Grand Regent of the Court of Short Hills at the St. Rose of Lima Parish in Short Hills.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Knox, in 1988. Surviving are a son, Harold C. Knox of Scotch Plains; her brother, Thomas Semon of Short Hills, and a granddaughter.

The funeral was held on Wednesday, November 15, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a Mass at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Interment took place at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

Violet Woroniecki, 85

Violet Woroniecki, 85, of the Somerset section of Franklin Township died on Thursday, November 9, at Somerset Manor North in Somerset.

Born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., she had lived in East Millstone before relocating to Somerset 51 years ago.

Mrs. Woroniecki was a member of the Franklin Township and Bound Brook Senior Citizens.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in East Millstone.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Woroniecki, in 1978. Surviving are three sons, Clem Woroniecki of East Windsor, John Woroniecki of East Brunswick and Matthew Woroniecki of Somerset; two daughters, Jean Orpen of Little Egg Harbor and Margaret Seeburg of Piscataway; two brothers, John Matonis of Scotch Plains and William Matonis of Newark; two sisters, Rose McFall of Endicott, N. Y. and Maggie Aleszczyk of Allentown, Pa., and nine grandchildren.

Services were held on Monday, November 13, from the Gleason Funeral Home in Somerset, followed by a Mass at St. Joseph’s Church. Interment took place at St. Peter Cemetery in New Brunswick.

J. Albert Lacy, 69

J. Albert Lacy, 69, of Barnegat died on Tuesday, November 7, at home.

Born in Bayonne, he had lived in Scotch Plains and Green Brook before relocating to Barnegat in 1999.

Mr. Lacy was a fundraiser coordinator for the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. He had previously worked in the same capacity for New York University, the New Jersey Institute of Technology and other universities and hospitals in New Jersey and New York.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Lacy was awarded a bachelor’s degree in business and science from Rutgers University in 1952.

Surviving are his wife, Irene C. Lacy; a daughter, Marilynn Lacy Hendricks; a son, Mark Lacy, and three grandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Monday, November 13, in St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, following the funeral from the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Herbert Wetter, 72

Herbert Wetter, 72, of Monroe Township died on Friday, November 10, in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

Born in Westfield, he had lived in Newark and Millburn before relocating to Monroe Township eight years ago.

Mr. Wetter and his wife, Shirley, owned and operated three Burger King franchises in Monsey, N. Y., Nanuet, N. Y. and Clifton for many years before retiring eight years ago.

He had previously owned and operated the Cedar Post Market in Chatham for 30 years.

Mr. Wetter was a member of the Concordia Golf Club and the B’nai B’rith South Mountain Lodge.

Surviving are a daughter, Allyson Ranzer; a son, Philip Wetter; a brother, Albert Wetter; a sister, Miriam Rekoon, and two grandchildren.

Services were held on Monday, November 13, in the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

Helen Quinn, 89

Helen Quinn, 89, of Cranford died on Saturday, November 4, in the Cranford Health and Extended Care Center.

Born in Bayonne, she had lived in Roselle for many years and also in Westfield before moving to Cranford.

Mrs. Quinn was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Joseph the Carpenter Roman Catholic Church in Roselle.

Surviving are a son, John A. Quinn; two daughters, Dolores La Fluer and Eileen Donnelly; two sisters, Rita Eckhardt and Josephine Gittens; eight grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.

A Mass was held on Wednesday, November 8, in St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Garwood.

Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue in Cranford.

November 23, 2000 Mildred McClary, 93

Mildred Sutphin McClary, 93, of South Plainfield died on Wednesday, November 8, in the Genesis Elder Care Center, The Woodlands, in Plainfield.

Born in Reaville, she had lived in the Hunterdon County area and in Scotch Plains for 58 years before moving to South Plainfield in 1996.

Mrs. McClary was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, James P. McClary, in 1968. Surviving are two daughters, Della Varga of Sunset Beach, N. C. and Mildred Ann McClary of Riverview, Fla.; three sons, Robert McClary of South Plainfield, James McClary of Punta Gorda, Fla. and Richard McClary of Jackson; a sister, Catherine Marshall of Reaville; 16 grandchildren; 24 greatgrandchildren and a greatgreat granddaughter.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 13, at the McCriskin Home for Funerals in South Plainfield. Interment followed in Lake Nelson Memorial Park Cemetery in Piscataway.

Mary G. Jordan, 83

Mary Gwendolyn “Bobbie” Jordan, 83, of Westfield died on Saturday, November 11, at the Villa Maria Nursing Home in North Plainfield.

Born in Dubuque, Iowa, she had lived there until moving to Denver, Colo., in 1936. She relocated from Denver to Westfield four months ago when she came to live with her son, William Jordan.

She had been an executive assistant to the business editor of the

Rocky Mountain News in Denver for 43 years, retiring in 1982.

Surviving, in addition to her son, are two sisters, Anna Mae McEndaffer and Rita Du Charme, both of Denver, and three grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held yesterday, Wednesday, November 15, at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.

Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Memorial donations may be made to the Helping Hands and Hearts of St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church, Lamberts Mill Road, Westfield, 07090.

Theresa McElroy, 90

Theresa McElroy, 90, of Mountainside died on Thursday, November 9, in the home of her daughter, Maureen Burke, also of Mountainside.

Born in Drummin, County Mayo, Ireland, she had lived in Newark before relocating to Mountainside 17 years ago.

Mrs. McElroy was a member of the Rosary Altar Society of the Sacred Heart Church in Vailsburg.

Also surviving are two other daughters, Ann Hynes and Joan McElroy; a son, Owen J. McElroy; two sisters, Julia Gaven and Nora O’Connor, and seven grandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Monday, November 13, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.

Arrangements were handled by the William R. Dangler Funeral Home in Summit.

Clemaline Capone, 85, Had Worked At Hahnes; Was Active With Church

Clemaline Capone, 85, of the Greenbriar Woodlands section of Toms River, died on Saturday, November 11, at home.

Born in Dunlo, Pa., she had lived in Kenilworth and Westfield before moving to Toms River 13 years ago.

Mrs. Capone had been a salesperson with Hahnes department store in Westfield for 23 years before retiring in 1977.

She was a bingo worker, a member of the Rosary Society and a blood drive volunteer, all with St. Joseph Church in Toms River. In addition, she served on the Interfaith Council for the Homeless with the church.

Surviving are her husband, James J. Capone, Sr.; a son, James Capone, Jr.; two daughters, Regina R. Capone

and Elizabeth Sampson, and seven grandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Tuesday, November 14, in St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church in Kenilworth, following the funeral from the Mastapeter Funeral Home in Roselle Park.

Leo N. Franco, 83, Was Retired Welder; Began Ballroom Dance Club With Wife

Mary A. DeMarco, 90

Mary A. DeMarco, 90, of Roselle Park died on Wednesday, November 15, in Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth.

Born in Italy, she had lived in New York City and in Westfield before moving to Roselle Park in 1947.

Mrs. DeMarco had been a seamstress with the International Ladies Garment Workers Union in New York City and also in the Union County area for more than 50 years before retiring 25 years ago.

She was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Joseph the Carpenter Roman Catholic Church in Roselle.

Surviving are a son, Anthony C. J. DeMarco, and a daughter, Diana J. DeMarco.

A Mass was offered on Saturday, November 18, in St. Joseph the Carpenter Church, following the funeral from the Mastapeter Funeral Home in Roselle Park.

Florence Gallaway, 91

Florence P. Gallaway, 91, of McConnelsville, Ohio, died on Wednesday, November 15, at home.

Born on June 24, 1909 in Providence, R. I., she had lived in Westfield before moving to McConnelsville.

She had been a secretary for the CrollReynolds Company, Inc. in Westfield before her retirement.

She was a member of the Morgan County Senior Citizens in McConnelsville and the Morgan County Senior Volleyball Team.

She was predeceased by her husband, W. Emmett Gallaway, in 1985; her parents, Annie DeVries Plantinga and Peter F. Plantinga, and by two sisters, Dorothy Sinnenberg and Wilaglmina Vander Hyde.

Surviving are two daughters, Blythe Schubert of McConnelsville and Colleen Carroll of Overland Park, Kan.; a sister, Anne Austin of Jacksonville, N. C.; three grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

Memorial services were held on Friday, November 17, at the MillerHuck Funeral Home in McConnelsville.

George M. Walker, 83

George M. Walker, 83, of the Lake Ridge section of Dover Township, died on Wednesday, November 15, at home.

Born in Newark, he had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Lake Ridge four years ago.

Mr. Walker had been an elevator mechanic with Otis Elevator in New York City for 30 years before retiring 21 years ago.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife, Anita Walker; three daughters, Susan Gray, Carol Bischoff and Nancy Coniglio; three stepdaughters, Marie McCarren, Frances Lyons and Joanne Mondoro; 16 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Saturday, November 18, at the Holy Family Church in Lakewood, following the funeral from the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home in Lakehurst.

Donald W. Cherry, 78, Was Mason; Retired Corporate Insurance Manager

Donald W. Cherry, 78, of Florham Park died on Saturday, November 18, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Newark, Mr. Cherry had lived in Scotch Plains and New Providence for 28 years before relocating to Florham Park seven months ago.

He had been a corporate insurance manager for Sperry & Hutchinson in New York City for more than 20 years before retiring in 1982.

Mr. Cherry, a mason for 52 years, was Past District Deputy Grand Master for the state of New Jersey; Past Master of the Scotch Wood Lodge in Scotch Plains and a member of the

Crescent Temple in Trenton. He additionally was a member of the Atlas Pythagoras Lodge in Westfield and the Old Guard of New Providence.

He was a Past President of Risk Insurance Management in New York City.

Surviving are two daughters, Pat Praet and Lynn Cherry; a brother, Richard Cherry, and two grandchildren.

Services were held on Tuesday, November 21, in the William R. Dangler Funeral Home in Summit.

Leo N. Franco, 83, of Lakewood died on Monday, November 13, in the Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood.

Born in Brooklyn, he had lived in Westfield before relocating to Lakewood in 1987.

Mr. Franco had been a welder with the Industrial Welding Company of Newark from 1948 until his retirement in 1981. He had contributed to the construction of sculptures designed by artist Tony Smith.

Mr. Franco served in the Civil Services during World War II, repairing battleships in Hawaii.

He and his wife of 55 years, Clara, founded “Our Dance Club,” a ballroom dancing club in Westfield, in 1971. They had also been members

of the “Thumb Club,” another Westfield dance club.

Mr. Franco was a member of the Lions Head Woods Bowling League in Brick.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three daughters, Frances Lenzo, Leonore Arthur and Annette Worswick; a sister, Eleanor Tamborello, and five grandchildren.

Services took place on Friday, November 17, at the Silverton Memorial Funeral Home in Toms River, followed by a Mass at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church in Brick.

Mildred Chrone, 72

Mildred Vendetti Chrone, 72, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, November 16, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Bound Brook, she had lived in Westfield for three years and Fanwood for 15 years before moving to Scotch Plains 30 years ago.

Surviving are her husband, Maurice Chrone; a daughter, Dr. Michele Chrone of Wall Township; a son, Michael Chrone of Scotch Plains; five sisters, Gerry Ofsik, Virginia Hussey, Edna Valerio, Antoinette Miller and Rita Kugler, and two grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Monday, November 20, from the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Raymond Curley, 94, Retired Salesman; Had Been Tennis Champ During 1920s

Raymond Larkin Curley, 94, of Shrewsbury died on Sunday, November 19, at home.

Born in Hoboken on September 24, 1906, he had lived in East Orange, Newark and in Westfield before moving to Shrewsbury in 1972.

A graduate of Hoboken High School, he subsequently became a local tennis champion in East Orange in 1923.

Mr. Curley had been a salesman for Remington Rand Corporation in Newark for many years before retiring in 1971.

He was a member of the Red Bank Old Guard before the organization disbanded in 1998.

He was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Red Bank.

He was predeceased by his parents, John J. and Catherine Elliot Curley; a sister, Dorothy Brady, and a brother, John E. Curley.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mary Trelease Curley; a son, John Curley of Summit; six daughters, Mary Pat Hollenbach of Little Silver, Helen Price of Westfield, Peggy Carleton of East Windsor, Kathy Biersack of Brick, Rita Stutzman of Treasure Island, Fla. and Jane Rosenberger of Ventnor; 27 grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Wednesday, November 22, in St. James Roman Catholic Church. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Arrangements were under the direction of the John E. Day Funeral Home in Red Bank.

Jean Martinez, 86, of Westfield died on Wednesday, November 15, at home.

Born in Brooklyn, she lived in Westfield since 1984.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Cutro; three grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Saturday, November 18, at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield, following the funeral from the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.

Emmanuella Pontoni, 73, Had Taught Culinary Arts at Business and Schools

Mae Emmanuella Pontoni, 73, of Bethlehem, Pa., died on Thursday, November 16, in Kirkland Village in Bethlehem.

Born in Cleveland, she had lived in Westfield before relocating to Bethlehem in 1991.

Mrs. Pontoni had been a culinary instructor and caterer at Strawberry Kitchen in Westfield for 10 years before retiring in 1988. She was also a culinary arts teacher in Union County schools.

She attended John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio. She was a member of the women’s club, senior group and friendship club at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bethlehem.

Surviving are her husband, Arthur Pontoni; three daughters, Nancy Fleming, Margaret Meyers and Mary Lou Steele, and five grandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Monday, November 20, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bethlehem.

Arrangements were handled by the Connell Funeral Home in Bethlehem.

Thomas M. Gibney, 82

Thomas Matthew Gibney, 82, of Mountainside died on Friday, November 17, at home.

Born in Jersey City, he had lived in Plainfield before moving to Mountainside 38 years ago.

Mr. Gibney had worked for the American Abrasive Metals Company in Irvington for 51 years before retiring as a sales manager in 1989.

He received an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Union County College in 1994, at the age of 76.

Mr. Gibney was an honorary member of the Mountainside Police Benevolent Association and the Aviation Boatswain’s Mates Association, where he served as Chaplain.

In August, he became the first recipient of the Honorary Living Legend Award presented by the Aviation Boatswain’s Mates Association.

He served as an usher at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Gibney; two daughters, Mary Lu Korkuch and Tommie Ann Gibney, and a grandchild.

A Mass was offered on Tuesday, November 21, in the Chapel at Mount St. Mary Academy in Watchung.

Arrangements were under the direction of Smith and Smith (Suburban) in Springfield.

Betty N. Bernatt, 82

Betty Nettie Bernatt, 82, of Lakewood died on Thursday, November 16, in Jackson Health Care in Jackson.

Born in Roselle, she had lived in Westfield before relocating to Lakewood 50 years ago.

Surviving are two sons, George Bernatt and Ron Bernatt; a daughter, Karen Ryder; a brother, Mike Druzek; three sisters, Mary Underwood, Dolores Politz and Eve Donahue, and a grandchild.

Private services were arranged by the Lakewood Funeral Home in Howell.

Catherine Holmes, 63

Catherine Holmes, 63, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, November 16, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Atlanta, Ga., she had lived in Brooklyn before relocating to Scotch Plains 23 years ago.

Mrs. Holmes was a supervisor with the United States Postal Service in Brooklyn, where she worked for 27 years. She was also a salesperson with Sears Roebuck & Company in Watchung for five years.

She was a member of the Fountain Baptist Church of Summit and of Rebecca Chapter No. 1 of Order of the Eastern Star in Plainfield.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Holmes, in July. Surviving are a daughter, Pamela F. Mason of Fresh Meadows, Long Island, N. Y.; two sisters, Lottie Williams and Mary Louise Jinks, both of Atlanta, and a granddaughter.

Services were held on Monday, November 20, at the Fountain Baptist Church.

The Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield was in charge of the arrangements.
