Historical Society Announces Program on Betsy Frazee
SCOTCH PLAINS – The Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood will present a program on Betsy Frazee on Tuesday, November 28, at 8 p. m. at the Fanwood train station at North and Martine Avenues.
Local resident and architectural historian Stacy E. Spies, who has done archival research on the Colonialera Betsy Frazee Home in Scotch Plains, will discuss Betsy and the home’s other inhabitants. The house
still stands on the property which until recently was occupied by the Scotch Plains Zoo.
Legend has it that Betsy Frazee was baking bread in her home on June 26, 1777 when the aroma attracted the attention of British Loyalists in the area following the Battle of Short Hills.
Their commander, Lord Cornwallis, was said to have asked Betsy for bread for his troops. She replied, “I give this, sir, in fear, not in love,” according to the story. Cornwallis then reportedly refused the bread and went on his way.
Refreshments and fellowship will follow the meeting. Further information about the Historical Society may be obtained from its President, Richard Bousquet, at P. O. Box 261, Scotch Plains, 07076, or by calling (908) 2321199.
