Devil Gridmen Hope to Halt Two Year Skid to Cardinals
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11
The game was annually drawing nearly 10,000 fans and usually involved two teams battling for sectional honors. In 1949, 11,000plus watched Plainfield post a 196 victory that finished the first perfect season in school history. It was also the first of 11 straight victories for PHS in the series, a streak that ended in 1960 when the Blue Devils gave Les Zorge a 137 victory in his final game as head coach. Sophomore Marty Howarth had two interceptions, a fumble recovery and a touchdownsaving tackle.
Gary Kehler’s coaching tenure at WHS saw the Blue Devils go 185 against the Cardinals, including 14 straight wins from 1968 through 1981 (ironically, the WHS quarterbacks on either side of that streak were Bob Brewster in ’67 and his brother Roger in ’82).
The bitterness of the rivalry may best be summed up in 1978 and ’79, when the Blue Devils scored a total of 9 points and won both games! The
’78 team went 72 but didn’t qualify for the playoffs, despite beating three of the four teams who did qualify. A crowd of nearly 12,000 packed Hub Stine Field that day, with Steve Bodmer hitting Jimmy Tyler for the touchdown and captain John Byrne making a TDsaving tackle and INT to save the day in a 62 victory. The following year, with WHS coming off a 3820 loss to Livingston in the playoffs, both teams were flat, and Westfield won 32 on Steve Rothrock’s field goal.
Tomorrow’s game will be the final one for another outstanding class of WHS seniors, led by captains Mike Mroz, a fullback/ safety, and Paul Johnston, a guard/ defensive end. Other lastgame Blue Devils include: quarterback Ryan MacDonald, halfback Matt Simone, guard/ linebacker David King, tackle Chris Dodge, tackle Mathew Seagull, center/ tackle Tim Young, tackle Darnell Muse, tackle Shawn Brown, tight end/ cornerback Jim Mitchell.
Westfield ‘Y’ Devilfish Sink Hamilton in Season Opener
The Westfield YMCA boys swim team won their dual meet season opener, 108103, against Hamilton on November 4. Westfield took an early lead by dominating the individual medleys and maintained that lead throughout the meet. Outstanding performances by five double winners in individual events combined with wins in four of five relay events also propelled the Devilfish to victory.
Michael Oster took first in both the 8/ U 25 free (15.35) and the 25 fly (20.32). Gordon Peeler also had double wins in the 9/ 10 100 IM (1: 24.01) and 50 free (32.61). Michael Fragna and Like Baran led the 11/ 12’s with dual victories in the 50 free (28.10) and 50 back (32.67); and 100 IM (1: 12.06) and 50 fly (31.59), respectively. 13/ 14’s Dan Chabanov and Ryan Bartholomew also had two wins a piece in the 200 IM (2: 28.70) and 100 breast (1: 16.38); and 100 free (55.96) and 100 back (1: 05.27), respectively.
The Devilfish dominated the re lays to cinch wins in age groups 8/ U
through 13/ 14. Winning relays were 8/ UOster/ Taylor/ Metz/ Meserole, 9/ 10O’Brien/ Blum/ Morgan/ Peeler, 11/ 12Fragna/ Murray/ Hager/ Baran, and 13/ 14Chabanov,/ Heinen/ Hedman/ Bartholomew.
Other top finishers for Westfield were 8/ unders T. West and C. Terwelp, who finished first in the 25 breast and 25 back respectively. 9/ 10’s M. Messerole and P. Anton won the 50 back and 50 fly respectively, while S. Hager won the 11/ 12 50 breast. C. Heinen had a strong lead to win the 13/ 14 100 fly.
Volleyball Viking Girls Stump Hawthorne in Group 2 Tourney
It was a sweet victory, although somewhat on the bitter side. The 10thranked Union Catholic High School girls’ volleyball team bounced previously unbeaten, eighthranked Hawthorne from the NJSIAA/ PSEG Group 2 tournament, 715, 158, 155, in Hawthorne on November 16.
The Vikings began play without the services of outside hitter Linda
Dolansky, who broke her right ankle last week. Adding to the Vikings’ woes was junior Jackie Monroy, who severely injured her knee in the first game and could not return. At that time, the momentum gave Hawthorne a 157 victory in game one.
Hawthorne continued and took an early 50 lead in game two but the Vikings tightened the score, 54, after two service points from Deena Zack and Kathy Babicz. Then the Vikings went ahead, 75, when Jennifer Monroy made a key block, Zack notched another kill and Rachel Seamon added a service point. A service point and a kill from Jennifer Monroy, two kills from Zack and fourstraight service points by Seamon earned the motivated Vikings a 158 victory.
The Vikings’ determination broke Hawthorne’s spirit and went on to win game three, 155. Zack finished with 13 kills and Jennifer Monroy finished with 10 kills, seven blocks and three aces as the Vikings rose to 222 while Hawthorne dropped to 251.
No. 9 Caldwell V’ballers Defeat Viking Girls, 1517, 157. 155
The ninthranked 290 Caldwell High School girls volleyball team pulled off a comefrombehind, 1517, 157, 155, victory over 10thranked Union Catholic in the NJSIAA Group 2 championships in Wayne on November 18. Caldwell’s Lauren Czaszynski made the difference with 18 kills and 10 digs.
The Union Catholic Vikings, despite suffering the loss of stars Linda Dolansky and Jackie Monroy, won the first game, but Czaszynski came alive, notching 11 kills in the second game. In the third game, Caldwell’s Daisy Prieto had sevenstraight service points. Teammate Brianna Valdala had 29 assists.
Deena Zach notched 15 kills and Kathy Babicz had 28 assists for the 233 Vikings.

The Scotch PlainsFanwood U10 Sparx girls’ soccer team shutout the Clark Stars, 30, on November 12.
Brittney Veeck scored the first goal after a pass from Katie Cornacchia. Rebecca Von Langen and Christina Camarda demonstrated excellent goaltending, which kept Clark from scoring in the first half. Stephanie Glover made several excellent offensive plays, balancing out impressive defense by Jennie Altman, who stopped two of Clark’s scoring attempts. Jenna McGarry contributed blazing shots on goal.
The second half saw phenomenal work by Camarda, who passed to Cornacchia, who in turn scored, bringing the count to 20. SPF Revolution Takes Second at Spookarama
The Scotch PlainsFanwood U11 Revolution boys soccer team placed second in the North Brunswick Spookarama Tournament on October 28, then later defeated Bridgewater, 32.
At the Spookerama, the Revolution defeated Freehold, 21, then fell to the Old Bridge Sharks, 50, in the finals. Against Freehold, Eddie Kahn scored on a joint assist from Tommy Hercel, and Jordan Neuhauser. Scoring attempts from Steve D’Angelo, Molinaro and Ryan Mullen, off the post, kept the pressure on Freehold’s goalkeeper. Tommy Holt and John Guiffre provided awesome defense.
Against Bridgewater, Kahn netted all three goals in the first half. Assists from Jimmy Strobel and Hercel and tenacious offense from Steve D’Angelo, John DeLuca, Neil Merchant and Brandon Reddington kept the ball in the Revolution’s possession for most of the half. The Galaxy made the most of their opportunities and scored both of their goals in the half.
Defense ruled in the second half. Ryan Krueger, John Guiffre and Neuhauser controlled play while Mullen, Jordan Sedwin and Tim Stuart tried to extend the lead.
