West Windsor V’ballers Stop Westfield Girls, 1614, 1512

It was about as close as it could get, but the 18thranked West WindsorPlainsboro South (WWPS) High School girls’ volleyball team skimmed past Westfield, 1614, 1512, in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA Group 4 tournament in West Windsor on November 14. The spectacular play of 6’2” WWPS senior Brynn Hollows, with her superior blocking and killing power, proved just enough to oust the Blue Devils.

In game one, Westfield battled back from a 127 deficit to take a 1413 lead. Unfortunately, with WWPS serving, two kills notched by Hol lows and another by teammate Katie

Lala ended the game. In game two, WWPS took a commanding 146 lead, but the Blue Devils battled back with four service points from Breigh Ann Menza and one kill each from Kelley Masterson and Nikki LeBlanc. But once again, it was Hollows and Lala to the rescue as WWPS prevailed.

Blue Devil Laura Avdey notched seven kills and Masterson and Patty Oslislo both notched four. Hollows finished with 10 blocked shots and 10 kills. Westfield fell to 176 while West WindsorPlainsboro South improved to 242.

Schiller’s pass but kept his senses and grabbed it as he was airborne for a 28yard gain. Next, Schiller hit Larkin for 18 yards, placing the ball on the three where Freshwater carried it in for the TD with 10: 39 remaining.

Despite the loss of Pavoni and Finklestein, the “Wild Dogs” got tough and stopped the Wolfpack on their next two drives.

In the meantime, momentum seemed to be on the Raiders side late in the fourth. After Kyle Adams’ punt return gave the Raiders decent field position on their own 47, the Raiders marched to the Wolfpack 20. Unfortunately, on fourthandfive, Schiller dropped back to pass but the ball was jarred backward where it was recovered by the Wolfpack at the 47. The Raider defense held but so did the Wolfpack’s when Mike Lublanecki intercepted Schiller’s pass on the Raider 45 with 2: 33 left.

The Raider defense held tight and had the Wolfpack offense facing a

fourthandnine from the 31. With just :50 remaining, Allan found Brian Kevil open over the middle. A few steps and a PAT later, the Wolfpack led 2114.

“We were out of linebackers and tight ends,” explained Ciccotelli. “At the end, for about a quarter and a half, we couldn’t mix up the run with our passing game. And that’s what hurt. But our kids played a great game.”

Ciccotelli concluded, “I told our kids at halftime that we were outhitting them. We were doing everything we wanted to do, but we got hurt. But with all of those injuries, we gave them everything we had.”

West Morris improved to 91 and play Warren Hills for the title on December 2. The 73 Raiders will be hosted by Union today at 11: 00 a. m. for the annual Thanksgiving Day classic.

SPF Soccer Jazz Girls Tie

Somerset Hills Devils, 11

The Scotch PlainsFanwood Jazz girls intercity soccer team finished its regular season with a 11 tie against the Somerset Hills Devils at Pleasant Valley Park on November 19.

With the tie, the Jazz finished their season unbeaten at 802 and finished in first place in their under 13 flight. Coach Mark Mintz and Assistant Coach Bob Hauser deserve kudos for their hard work

during this successful season. The Jazz used a balanced blend of good goaltending, strong defense and steady offense to remain undefeated. The top goalscorers on the Jazz this season were Bitsy Kipping, Hallie Mintz and Shannon Hauser. Tops in assists were Gaby Falco, Jess McGarry, Meg Kelly and Jessica Churgin. The defense was anchored by Katie Van Haasteren, Briana Falco, Becca McGuire and Lauren Hercel. Solid goaltending was provided by Kristen Henkels and Lindsey Fitzgerald. New additions, Staci Goldberg and Michelle Protopapas, provided a spark to the offense. Loni Kaye missed the entire season due to a foot injury.

After participating in the upcoming Rahway Thanksgiving Tournament, the Jazz will take a much needed break and will look forward to continuing their winning ways in the spring.

Devil XC ‘Pac’ Finishes Ninth at Meet of Champs

By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

The Westfield High School girls cross country team placed ninth with a total of 210 at the Meet of Champions which was won by Hunterdon Central with 95 points in Holmdel on November 18. Six of the seven Blue Devil girls crossed with personalbest (PB) times at that meet.

“It turned out exactly the way you would have read it out of the group meet,” said Blue Devil Head Coach Tom Hornish. “We had the eighth fastest time there but that was with the knowledge that Shawnee which placed sixth at the MOC ran without their number one runner (then). That means for us to be effective, we would have had to turn it up significantly to break into the top six.”

Blue Devil senior Alexis Anzelone crossed 31st with a time of 20: 13, just edging Sarah Rhodes of Voorhees. Sensation Erin Donohue of Haddonfield – also the 1,600 and 3,200meter state champion – literally dusted the field, finishing in 18: 27, :46 ahead of Jesse Mizzone of Passaic Valley.

Kyle Legones was the second Blue Devil runner, finishing 72nd with a PB time of 20: 57.19. Rachel Ackerman finished 78th with a time of 21: 03.87. The other four “Pac” girls who recorded PB times were: Sarah Mahran, 85th at 21: 10.25; Jackie Cusimano, 90th at 21: 17.09; Erin McClellan, 93rd at 21: 21.08

and Carolyn Harbaugh, 132nd at 22: 26.

The combined times averaged to 20: 56.38 which was the Blue Devils’ fastest competitive time this season and the second best in team history.

“As it was, we improved by 10 seconds (from the last time),” pointed out Hornish. “That’s something that is really important because every time we have run this season, we have run a faster race.”

How did this season’s “Pac” size up with the best in WHS history?

“The 1995 team had the distinction of having a faster time at Holmdel (20: 42),” said Hornish. “But if you look at the overall season, this is the best team.”

Scotch PlainsFanwood High School junior Bob Wallden finished 24th in the boys race with a time of 16: 42. Mike Myers of Eastern won the boys event with a time of 15: 50.
