College Night Planned At Westfield High

WESTFIELD — On Thursday, November 16, at 7: 30 p. m., Westfield High School will host approximately 200 colleges and universities at its annual College Night.

This event gives students and their parents an opportunity to gather information about colleges and universities nationwide. College representatives provide literature and answer questions about their schools.

Begun more than 30 years ago by the College Woman’s Club of Westfield and now hosted by the High School’s Guidance Department.

“Westfield’s College Night has long been known as one of the biggest and finest in New Jersey,” according to Dr. Robert G. Petix, Principal of Westfield High School.

“It is appropriate that College Night is once again being held during American Education Week,” noted Dr. Cas Jakubik, Westfield High School Director of Guidance.

“Since 92 percent of our recent graduates continued their education, there is clearly a need to provide our high school population and their parents with a broad overview of colleges and universities for their consideration. We encourage our current students and families to attend,” Mr. Jakubik concluded.

School Bond Presentation Organized at Westfield High

WESTFIELD — The public is invited to attend a meeting at Westfield High School at 7: 30 p. m. on Wednesday, November 15, at which time Superintendent of Schools Dr. William J. Foley will present information on the proposed school bond referendum.

“All members of the public are welcomed to learn more about the recommendations made by the Board of Education and the Citizens Advisory Committee,” stated Dr. Foley.

The recommendations include a 55,000 square foot addition to Westfield High School and renovations to upgrade classrooms and support areas.

“Although the presentation will be held at the beginning of the high school PTO meeting, we are urging all residents to attend,” said Board President Darielle Walsh. “Parents of students at the intermediate and elementary school age are also encouraged to come. These improvements at the high school will affect them the most.”

A bond referendum to finance these improvements will be placed before Westfield voters on December 12. Dr. Foley will discuss the amount of the bond referendum, the state aid figure and the details of the bond at the November 15 meeting.

The state had not yet notified the district of its funding amount at the time of this news release.

DECA Chapter Announces New Ventures, Activities

SCOTCH PLAINS – During the week of October 2228, Scotch PlainsFanwood High School (SPFHS) DECA students celebrated National DECA Week.

The local chapter focuses its efforts on many community service activities such as visiting nursing homes monthly, a Thanksgiving Day dinner for the homeless, providing basic needs of over 80 families of the Interfaith Council, toy drives, food drives, and other efforts.

Fanwood Mayor Louis C. Jung and Scotch Plains Mayor Martin L. Marks issued a proclamation recognizing DECA Week in the communities. The students posted a banner on Park Avenue, distributed posters and visited high school classes, Ashbrook Nursing Home, and held a Halloween party for the Interfaith Council children.

DECA TShirt Day and Blazer Day were held at SPFHS. Juniors David Baumwoll, Ryan Crawford and Andrew Pavoni planned the week.

“We are trying to show the community what DECA is all about,” said David, “and encourage involvement with our community. DECA has successfully done this in the past, and we feel it is our responsibility to maintain this tradition.”

In addition, DECA is planning its 7th Annual “AdoptaFamily” program for the holiday season. Working with the Union County Interfaith Council and the Scotch Plains Welfare Department, the students aim to provide some clothing and household items, and toys for many children and families in need.

DECA reports that there has been an overwhelming show of support for these families in the past, but that there is a need for more sponsors.

DECA is seeking sponsors for over 90 families and over 200 children. Many of the Union County Interfaith families live in various churches, synagogues or other temporary shelter, on a rotating basis, until permanent housing can be found by the Council. All of the Interfaith families are trying to rebuild their lives, and have very basic needs including clothing and household items such as sheets and blankets.

DECA student Rob Bugg stated, “Last year, we had over 60 groups, businesses or residents adopting a fam ily, so our AdoptaFamily program is

growing. It has become a community effort.”

If any resident, group or business is interested in adopting a family, DECA will provide a brief description of the families and their wish list. The sponsor would then be responsible for purchasing items on that wish list for the entire family. The list will become available on November 10, and the gifts will be distributed by DECA at a special December 15 holiday party they are planning with Interfaith.

To adopt a family, please call DECA at (908) 8898600.
