Orthodontist Visits China As Part of U. S. Delegation

Westfield/ Mountainside Red Cross Hires New Health/ Safety Director

WESTFIELD — The Westfield/ Mountainside Chapter of the American Red Cross has announced that Linda Johnson has joined the chapter as its Director of Health and Safety

Ms. Johnson holds a degree in psychology and was a longtime employee of another Westfield nonprofit organization. Among her many strengths are running programs for youth in child care, teens and summer camps.

She is a lifetime resident of Westfield and lives in town with her

husband, Tim, and daughter, Amber. As part of her job, she will be teaching and overseeing the instructors of the chapters health and safety classes. These classes range from cardiopulmonary and first aid to community awareness and babysitting training.

The American Red Cross is also looking for volunteers and instructors. For more information on classes or to volunteer, please call Ms. Johnson at (908) 2327090.

LEARNING CHINESE DENTAL PRACTICES... Dr. Patricia Thrower, right, of Westfield visited with Dr. Coco Hongwei Liu of the Peking University School of Stomatalogy.

WESTFIELD — Dr. Patricia Thrower, a Westfield orthodontist, has recently returned from a working visit to China.

She was a delegate chosen to attend the Women in Dentistry Delegation to the People’s Republic of China.

The delegation consisted of 31 female dentists from the United States and Great Britain. Dr. Thrower was the only orthodontist from the United States to attend. The dental practitioners and specialists that were selected to participate in bilateral exchanges with their professional counterparts in China.

Through a series of meetings, site visits, formal presentations and informal discussions, delegates had an opportunity to see and gain an understanding of how dental services are rendered and how dental education is provided in the People’s Republic of China.

The women dental delegates met with higher education administrators, faculty, students, general practice dentists and specialists in Beijing, Xian and Shanghai. Dr. Thrower visited the orthodontic clinics in the Beijing Medical University School of Stomatology and the Peking University Dental School.

A special highlight was to view the practice of moxibustion at the Guang An Men Hospital, a traditional Chinese medicine Academy.

Dr. Thrower was a guest at the Fourth Army Medical University School of Dentistry, one of the foremost dental schools in China.

Shanghai was the final destination of the trip. There, Dr. Thrower vis ited Number 9 People’s Hospital

which is affiliated with Shanghai Second Medical University’s Stomatology College.

Dr. Thrower also had the opportunity to tour a private practice of a general dentist.

“There are very few private practices, as we know them, in China. Most medical and dental facilities are controlled by the government,” she noted.

Woman’s Club to Hold November 28 Luncheon

BERKELEY HEIGHTS – The Greater Federation of Woman’s Clubs’ Woman’s Club of Berkeley Heights will hold a “Warm Your Heart” luncheon, card and game party at noon on Tuesday, November 28.

The luncheon will include a large selection of homemade soup, rolls, dessert, tea and coffee. Admission is $10, which will benefit the club’s scholarship program.
