Consistency at a high level is a sign of a champion. And the No. 3 ranked Westfield High School gymnastics team have consistently been amassing team totals of 106 and above. This time, the Blue Devils elevated their record to 110 with a 107.7100.35 victory over a fine Scotch PlainsFanwood team.

As expected, Lauren and Jessica Caravello placed one and two, respectively, in the allaround. Lauren had a total of 36.9 and placed first in the uneven bars with a superb mark of 9.55, and also on the balance beam at 9.1 and the vault at 9.25. Lauren also placed third on the floor exercises with a score of 9.0.

Jessica’s allaround total was 35.5 and her score of 9.2 on the floor earned her first place. She placed second on the unevens with an 8.95 and received marks of 8.85 on the vault and 8.5 on the beam.

Blue Devil freshman Kristen Valla finished third in the allaround with a total of 34.6 followed by Raider freshman Kyla Mendes at 34.05 and Raider Megan Grabel at 32.8.

Valla placed second in the vault with a fine score of 9.2, third on the unevens at 8.75 and received marks of 8.85 and 7.8 respectively on the floor and beam.

Despite turning in a fine team total, the Raiders were without the services of one of their top gymnasts, Lindsay Church, who is still nursing a back injury. Church has been expected to compete in the Union County Tournament on October 27 in Westfield.

Mendes earned second place on the floor with a 9.05 and the Raider trio of Mendes, Rachel Eannucci and Jackie Tumulo shared second on the beam with scores of 8.7. Mendes also scored 8.15 on both the unevens and the vault. Grabel was the Raiders’ highest scorer on the vault with a score of 8.7, and, highlighted by her giant swings, she scored an 8.35 on the unevens. She also scored an 8.3 on the floor and a 7.45 on the beam.

Blue Devil Christina Massa placed third in the vaulting with a score of 8.9 and teammate Rachel Skolnick had an 8.45 on the beam, an 8.15 on the floor and a 7.65 on the unevens. Kathryn Brucia had a fine score of 8.4 in the vault and Jess Guerriero had a 7.5 on the unevens.

Eannucci also did well in the vault with a score of 8.05 and on the floor at 7.9. Tumulo had a 7.6 on the unevens and Karen Lucey and Lauren McManus had respective scores of 7.6 and 7.25 in the vault. Also competing well for the Raiders were Barie and Tracy Salmon and Erin Breznitsky.

Blue Devil Girls Fall Short; Lose, 21, to Soccer Cougars

Westfield was edged by Cranford at Hillside School in Cranford on Wednesday October 25 by a tight score of 21. Cranford, who sported a record of 150 coming into the game, matched up well with the Blue Devils, whose record was 1242. The game was dominated by defensive fervor and offensive luck.

The only offensive explosion for Westfield came in the eighteenth minute of the game when senior striker Susan Hinds launched a score behind diving Cranford goalie, Katy Donnelly.

The rest of the first half was dominated by the Cougars on the Blue Devils’ side of the field. Blue Devil juniors Morgan Lang and Jenny Hayes provided great patrol of Westfield’s net, while offensive prowling by the Cougar’s striker tandem of Katie Sands and Erica Stewart provided many scoring opps.

At the end of the half, however, the score was still 10 in favor of West field, with much thanks to awesome

goalkeeping by cocaptain Michelle Meglaughlin. In the first half alone, Meglaughlin successfully defended the net 12 times.

The beginning of the next half saw similar play, as Cranford kept the pressure on while the Westfield “D” repelled potential goals. That trend lasted for 25 minutes, then Cranford’s cocaptain Stewart broke free and tied the game.

After the goal, Hayes made her way down the field and drew keeper Donnelly out of the goal but her shot sailed just over the crossbar.

Ten minutes later, another goal just over the reach of Meglaughlin crept through the net. The shot by Sands put the Cougars ahead for good.

Although a tough loss, Westfield Head Coach Pete Giordano said, “We played a good game today, it was just a little frustrating.”

Cranford’s next game was a county game against Summit while Westfield faced Union Catholic in the Union County semifinals on October 28. seven plays for the Minutemen to go

74 yards. Ismail Abdunafi, a 245pound bruiser, filled in for the shifty Halsey and rumbled the final 19 yards right up the middle. Sessoms juked past three defenders for the PAT and

it was 146. Three incomplete passes later, Halsey fielded Cook’s punt at his own 26, got several crunching blocks and raced 74 yards for a backbreaking touchdown. The PAT kick was wide, leaving the score at just 206.

Elizabeth’s next drive ended when Mitchell recovered an Abdunafi fumble, but Halsey picked off MacDonald’s pass on the next play and Elizabeth then marched 83 yards in nine plays. Halsey, who finished with 262 yards rushing on just 16 carries, rambled 46 yards on a fake punt from the Elizabeth 25 to the Westfield 29. With seconds left in

the half, Sessoms hit 6foot5 Todd Scott on a slant pattern for a 25yard touchdown.

Any hopes the rejuvenated Devils had of getting back into the game

ended in a heartbeat. Halsey went off tackle for a 65yard touchdown on the first play of the second half.

Daly brought the small crowd for a game between teams with 51 and 42 records, the turnout was embarrasingly tiny on both sides to life with a 52yard kickoff return to the Elizabeth 35. That was the first glimpse of life on the Westfield sidelines since the opening minutes of the game. But four plays produced minus one yard and Elizabeth again drove deep into WHS territory, reaching the 12 before losing the ball on downs.

Jenkins then produced nearly half of Westfield’s total offense in one play, following blocks by Daly, Mitchell and David King for a 64yard burst around right end, before he was caught at the Elizabeth 21. Once again, the offense stalled and the third period ended with Halsey breaking off runs of 18 and 27 yards to the Westfield 39.

Elizabeth coach Jerry Moore put in his reserves to start the fourth period, but that didn’t stop the bloodletting. Four plays later, Curtis Elazier capped the long drive with a 13yard touchdown burst.

Cook averaged nearly 40 yards per punt on six kicks.

Elizabeth now leads the series, which began in 1898, 21132.

VELTRI SCORES DEVILS’ SOLE GOAL

Warriors’ Flurry Chills FH Lady Blue Devils, 41

By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Although the Watchung Hills High School field hockey Warriors toted a 3121 record into Westfield on October 26, you would not have known it by the way they played, especially in the second half where they rolled off three quick goals and grabbed a 41 victory over the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils held an edge in shots on goal but, once again, had trouble hitting pay dirt. Blue Devil keeper Lauren Coltrera made eight stops including three fine ones in the hazardous second half. In the meantime, Warriors Sarah Shipman, Maureen Gillen, Amanda Cheshire and Jeanmarie Albert each netted a goal while Jill Veltri scored the only Blue Devil goal.

Warrior Shipman, on a feed from Cheshire, scored the only goal of the first half with 28: 58 remaining. From that point, the Blue Devil offensive held the upper hand and nearly scored with four minutes left when a pass from Caitlin MacDonald was de flected off Julie Phelan’s stick and the

ball banged into the side of the goal. The Warriors took and maintained the offensive for most of the second half. Midway through the half, Coltrera kept the Blue Devils in the game with two nice stops on frontal attacks. Unfortunately for Westfield, with 17: 01 remaining, Gillian rushed in from the left side, received a pass from Erin Myers and flicked the ball into the right side of the net to give the Warriors a 21 lead. With 14: 49 left, Cheshire scored on an assist from Katie Bohler. Then one minute later, Albert broke away and undulated the net to give the Warriors a 40 lead.

Later, Veltri, playing in the center, received a corner pass and scored the Blue Devils’ only goal. Then with three minutes remaining, MacDonald got a penalty shot, but headsup play and fabulous reactions by the Warrior goalie prevented the score.

Westfield slipped to 673.

second with teammate Christina Massa – her only event – on the vault at 8.65, fourth on the unevens at 8.775 and tied with Tumolo and Erica Gebhardt of Union for seventh on the beam with a score of 8.1.

Blue Devil Rachel Skolnick, competing in three events, scored an 8.15 on the floor, a 7.6 on the beam and a 7.2 on the unevens.

Raider Mendes also placed second on the beam with a mark of 8.65, third on the unevens at 8.850 and seventh in the vault at 8.45. Tumolo also scored 8.2 on the floor and in the vault and a 7.55 on the unevens. Grabel also scored an 8.25 on the floor, a 7.6 on the unevens and a 6.350 on the beam. Competing in three events, Raider Rachel Eannucci scored an 8.0 in the vault a 7.7 on the beam and a 7.6 on the floor.

One of the Raiders’ top gymnasts, Lindsay Church, did not compete in the meet with the Blue Devils on October 24 and appeared still on the injury list for the UCT. Even though

she did not compete in the dual meet, the Raiders’ team total was still quite good.

“Everybody on beam had a really good routine,” said Raider Head Coach Tracy Brown of the dual meet, “I think that was what made our score so good. And we have been cleaning up our form and getting all of our connections.”

Prior to the UCT, Raider Brown revealed, “Lindsay is out for some time and won’t compete today because her back is too bad.”

Viking Drastura’s scores of 8.65 on the floor and 8.5 on the unevens, earned her a fifth in the events and her 8.5 in the vault earned her a sixth. She also scored an 8.05 on the beam. Valerie Mitchell also placed sixth on the unevens at 8.275 and earned scores of 8.25 and 8.4, respectively, on the floor and the vault. Melanie Mitchell also took sixth on the floor and had scores of 8.4 on the vault and 7.15 on the unevens. Viking Kristen Petela scored a 7.35 in the vault and a 7.05 on the floor.
