MAKING A DIFFERENCE… Secondgrade students in Patricia Arnao’s class at McGinn Elementary School in Scotch Plains recently raised $178.50 — including a $63 donation from their ParentTeacher Association — to help save 5.1 acres in the Maya Mountain Marine Corridor in Belize. Magnet High School Students Raise Funds for Rainforest
SCOTCH PLAINS— Students from the Union County Magnet High School were able to raise enough funds to “purchase” five acres that will extend and protect the ChocoAndean Rainforest Corridor Project in northwest Ecuador.
Because of the contributions, the Magnet High will have its name added to the list of benefactors which is displayed at the Maquipucuna Reserve in Ecuador. The funds were raised through bake sales and other schoolsponsored events.
Rainforest Concern, a nonprofit organization based in London, England, was the recipient of the school’s contribution. It is dedicated to securing the endangered lush green vegetation, wildlife and plant life of the Maquipucuna Reserve.
According to Geoffrey W. Zoeller, Jr., Principal of the Magnet High School, the rainforests are perhaps
the world’s most important natural resources. They provide the planet with oxygen, medicines and irreplaceable wildlife. They are crucial to the Earth’s survival. He added, however, cattleranching, timber extraction along with “slash and burn” agriculture are stripping the Earth of these natural resources.
Those wishing to contribute to this cause can do so by sending donations to Rainforest Concern, 27 Lansdowne Crescent, London W11 2NS. Forty dollars can protect one acre of land.
Magnet High School students who led the way during the campaign were: Katharyn Angeles, Betsy Gauthier; Mark Butler, Sara Carballo, Daniel Butchko, Kevin Reyes, Nikki Carpenter, Craig Montuori, David Levine, James Nelson, Ewa Solarz, Jeff Tangowski, Judy WickerBriscoe, and Ray Chow.
