FSP YMCA Hosts State Gymnastics Championships

With less than a single point separating the top three finishers, the hosting FanwoodScotch Plains “C” Division gymnastics team placed third in the 2000 State Championships of the New Jersey YMCA Girls Gymnastics League on May 7. Their team total of 83.40 fell just short of the secondplace Five Points team, with 83.80, and firstplace Madison team, with 84.15.

In the 9 and under age group, Lindsay Robinson was named State Champion on both vault and beam, while placing sixth on bars and fourth all around. She tied for sixth on floor with teammate Gina Pelosi, who took third on beam, seventh on vault and bars, and fifth all around. Allison Zelleralso had a strong showing on beam and floor.

For the 10yearolds, Francesca Lumetta tied for fifth on bars and sixth on floor. Magda Mierzejewska and Natalie Szaroleta placed fifth and ninth

on beam, respectively. FSP grabbed most of the top spots in the age 11 group. Laurel Devlin captured State Champion honors on bars, floor, and all around, while placing second on beam. She tied for gold on vault with teammate Samantha Scarinci, who placed second on bars and floor, and third all around. Named State Champion on beam, Katelyn Davitt placed second all around, third on bars and floor, and eighth on vault. Natasha Loeffler also performed well on beam.

The 12+ group saw Tracy Salmon take State Champion honors on beam and eighth on floor, while her twin sister Barie took fifth on bars. Karen Lucey placed third on vault and beam.

Attracting nearly 70 “C” Division gymnasts, the championship meet also included fourthplace finisher Montclair, with a team total of 81.50, and fifthplace South Mountain, with 79.40.

THIRDPLACE GYMNASTS… The FanwoodScotch Plains “C” Division gymnastics team placed third in the 2000 State Championships of the New Jersey YMCA Girls Gymnastics League on May 7.

Twenty Five Awards

Students from the Karate N Motion Family Martial Arts Center in Westfield recently won 25 awards in a Karate competition held at Brookdale Community College in Lindcroft. Students won nine first place trophies, seven second place, five thirds and finished fourth four times.

First place winners from Scotch Plains were Kellie Kaskiw (12) in sparring, Nick Blackwood (8) in sparring and Sue Cohen, who took the Senior Women’s Sparring Division title. Ibrahim Helm (10) took first in weapons kata and second in sparring. Sarah Cohen took second in sparring; Tristian Bundy (7) took second in weapons kata; Nooreen Helm (7) and Brian Glassett (12) each took

fourth in their respective weapons kata divisions. Nick Murray and Travis Rosado took third and fourth respectively in sparring.

Toni Koebli, of Clark, Bill Risberg of Westfield and Fred Rosado of Scotch Plains took 1,2,3 in the Men’s Senior Under Black Belt Sparring Division, while Colin Jenkins of Westfield repeated at third in the Senior Men’s Black Belt Division.

April and Jennifer Sirak of Garwood and Sana Husain of Plainfield, finished 1,2,3 in Kata, second and third in Weapons, and one/ two in sparring. Maggie Kowalski (8) of Berkley Heights, and Laura Stupi, (14) of Elizabeth won in sparring.

Proprietor and Grand Master Alan Simms has been teaching martial arts in the Westfield/ Scotch Plains area for nearly a decade and has a long list of Martial Arts achievements. Holy Trinity Wins 21st Annual Track Invit’l

The Holy Trinity Interparochial School, Westfield track team regained the overall team title in the 21st annual Holy Trinity Invitational Track Meet held in Westfield on May 7. The Trinity Blue Braves finished ahead of 10 area schools in the longestrunning parochial school track competition in New Jersey.

Holy Trinity outscored last year’s champion St. Clare’s of Staten Island, N. Y., 222197. Trinity also won the boys team title and finished second to St. Clare’s in the girls division.

In the McCabe Cup boys race, established in 1999 to honor Mr. Jerry McCabe, the meet’s founder and longtime director, the Trinity foursome of 8th graders Joe Korfmacher, Kevin Behr, Steve Fromtling and Brendan Egan, all of Westfield, combined for a winning 800meter sprint medley mark of 1: 56.91, just missing the eightyear old mark set by Holy Trinity in 1992.

The girls race was won by the Trinity 8th graders. Westfielders Deenie Quinn and Megan O’Shea were joined by Samantha Gregory of Plainfield and Courtney Bryson of Scotch Plains to record a time of 2: 11.74.

Egan at 2: 31.03 and Behr finished 13 in the 800 while Korfmacher at 1: 00.59 and Fromtling placed 23 in the 400 meters. Andrew Clark won the 100 meters in :12.82 and Jayson DeMarco placed fourth in the 1,600 in 5: 50.72. In field events, Korfmacher won the long jump in an impressive 15’0”.

In girls events, McCabe winner Bryson won her class 100meter title for the second year in a row. Gregory repeated as 800meter champion while Quinn and

O’Shea repeated as runnersup in the 1600 and 400, respectively.

In four hours of packed action, 352 medals were awarded in 55 individual running events, eight field events and 13 relays for studentathletes from 11 schools ranging from third through eighth grade.

WTA Women’s Singles Tennis Ladder Told:

2000 WSA Traveling Team Fall and Spring Tryouts:

The Westfield Soccer Association will hold tryouts for its Fall 2000 and Spring 2001 travel teams. Please note that tryouts for U13 and U14 teams are not combined this year. Our plan is to field two teams in each gender age group from U11 to U14. The U9 and U10 age groups will each have three teams if enough players try out.

The tryout location for girls is Sid Fay Field and for the boys is Houlihan Field. The first tryouts will be June 13 and the second tryouts will be the week of June 512. For more exact information on the first and second tryout dates for each age group, rules and regulations, eligibility, apparel, rain outs and excused absences,

Fanwood Youth Baseball Minor League Results:

The Tigers squared off with the Dodgers in a makeup game on May 12 and were victorious by a score of 144. Although the Dodgers did not pull out the win, Alex Carow and Matthew Sawchuk turned in a good game with three hits apiece. Dodgers second grader Marina Dugan provided a key hit.

On May 13, the Dodgers edged the Mets, 76, in a hard fought game. The Dodgers’ offense was sparked by Christopher Kocot and Christian Prince with key hits in the sixrun, two out rally in the bottom of the fifth inning. Good defense for the Dodgers was provided by Ian Feller.

Michael Kebbekus had a good day at the plate for the Mets with a triple and home run. Billy Muirhead broke out of a batting slump with a key single. Defensively, Dwayne Otha was outstanding, throwing a runner out at first with a strong throw from third base.

The Orioles defeated the Athletics 217 on May 15.

On May 16, the Cubs stopped the Dodgers 82. Jared Lindenberg and Christopher

Nix each had two hits for the Dodgers. Defensively, third baseman Christian Prince turned in a strong performance.
