Amateur Radio Operators Gear Up for Field Day Event
WATCHUNG RESERVATION – Amateur radio operators from the TriCounty Radio Association will work around the clock in the Loop area of Union County’s Watchung Reservation this Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25, during the American Radio Relay League’s Field Day.
Area participants will set up a field radio communication station, get on the air and contact thousands of other operators in the United States and Canada.
The annual event challenges ham radio operators to make contacts under conditions that simulate the aftermath of a disaster.
“It is a chance for our operators to get out of doors and have fun under difficult conditions,” explained TriCounty Radio Association President
David Sawyer. “We practice and finetune our emergency communications skills. We use generators and battery power and we set up antennas in the field,” he continued. “The idea is to put together a selfsufficient, working station quickly and begin making contacts under simulated disaster conditions.”
The site will be manned around the clock by amateur radio operators. Rain or shine, the TriCounty Radio Association’s field day operations will begin at 2 p. m. on Saturday and run until 2 p. m. on Sunday in the Loop Area of the Reservation, just off W. R. Tracy Drive. The public is encouraged to attend.

Scotch Plains P. B. A. Seeks Support for Fund Drive
SCOTCH PLAINS — Policemen’s Benevolent Association (P. B. A.) Local No. 87 of the Scotch Plains Police Department is currently conducting its Fund Drive.
Proceeds of the drive will be used to provide bulletproof vests for township officers, support the P. B. A. ’s Sick and Death Fund and many community projects.
All residents and township businesses have received letters requesting donations. After seven weeks, according to the P. B. A., the organization has only received responses from approximately 9 percent of the community.
The P. B. A. expressed appreciation to all who have contributed and has asked those who have not done so yet to make a donation, since the drive is the organization’s only means of raising the necessary funds to support services which benefit the community.
Any questions about the fund drive may be directed to Sergeants Zyla or Cassidy at Scotch Plains Police headquarters.
The P. B. A. spokesmen have issued a reminder to residents that the organization does not solicit funds by telephone or use any professional fundraising services.
They have also emphasized that the P. B. A. does not benefit from any other group claiming to support law enforcement in the community.
