Raphael chopped a single past third and Roberts followed with a sizzling double. Engelman’s ground out scored Raphael and Romash’s sacrifice to center scored Roberts. Naldony walked, then Grizzard rumbled to the plate and launched a tworun
homer to remote right. Giannaci followed with his solo shot to left. The “Blaise” needed some fuel in their “metal sticks” in the seventh and Grossmann figured to play a major roll. Stratton, Walz and Harry Semple each walked to load the bases, then Grossmann ripped a tworun single to right. Cocuzza grounded into a force play which scored Semple, closing the score to 1110. Pietrucka stepped to the plate and pounded a shot into the side of Cocuzza, who was off base, causing an automatic out and ending the game.

Westfield Recreation Holds Successful Playground Fair
The Westfield Recreation Summer Playgrounds held their annual playground fairs on July 13. Thanks to the support from all of the camper’s families and friends, the fairs were extremely successful.
Jeff Perrella and Brian Nelson held a soccer shoot out at the Franklin fair. Other popular booths included a water balloon toss set up by Melissa Ford, Emma Franks and Caroline Kupfer and a candy jarguessing booth made by Sara Nelson and Elise Annis.
Nick and Caitlin Hering of Wilson playground had a bobbing for apples booth and Karoline Cook asked contestants at her booth to try and extinguish a flame with a water gun.
AnnMarie Valentine and Melissa Souto of Washington playground gave their contestants three chances to try and hit their faces with wet sponges. Chris and Alex Graf made a candy toss for their booth.
Shante Barden, Jareah Lambert and Ebony Carter set up a nail booth at the Westfield Neighborhood Council. Other
booths were a keychain booth held by Nikki Bullock, Anika Cherry and Josien Bundy and Earl Lambert, Asad Majors and Jhakyse Williams held an M& M guessing contest.
Kelly, Liane and Scott Sullivan set up a sponge toss booth at Jefferson playground. Matthew DeMasi and Matthew DiFabio held a basketball toss and Michael Stravach challenged many attendees to try and beat him at his penny game.
McKinley featured a petting zoo which was run by Megan Feeney, Samantha Merritt, Kelly Dohm, Katie Lavecchia and Allison Johnson. Eric Grow, Jonathon Pizor and Brad Dworkin held a ring toss booth.
Adam Firestone and Matt Trinkle of Tamaques playground held a cookie walk for their booth. Megan Nogan and Rafaella Jakubovic made a balloon shaving booth and Brandon Levon, Alex McHugh and Mike Clancy held a water balloon toss.
Each playground is planning special events such as going to the movies or for ice cream with the extra money they raised. Perconte made a great kneesliding
catch in center field. Saint Paul Raphael – St. Paul – also had a marvelous running catch in center.
After a silent first inning, the Saints took a 50 lead in the top of the second with an RBI each from Perrine, Art Hobble and Nigro and two from Friedlander. The Angels answered with a tworun single from Spitzer.
In the fourth, Perrine’s RBI single, DiDonato’s groundrule double, followed by Rothenberg’s tworun single and Nigro’s RBI double gave the Saints a 92 lead. But it was matched in the bottom of the inning when Brian Williams and Bob Guy each added an RBI and “Easy” Ed Marchelitis ripped a tworun single.
Howard Jones gave the Saints a run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly and Angel Spitzer added one in the lower half of the inning.
The lead changed in the sixth, when Angel Rowbotham led off by crashing his solo homer to faraway
right field, Hansen hacked a tworun double and Williams whacked an RBI single.
One more run was added by the Angels in the seventh when Spitzer sizzled an RBI grounder, but the Saints tied it – 1212 – in the eighth when Friedlander and Joe Matuska tapped RBI singles.
Family Investor Pete Chemidlin scored to give the Angels a 1312 lead in the eighth, then Kevin Woodring and Hansen added insurance with RBI singles. However, being of championship quality, Mark DiFrancesco drilled a tworun single to bring the Saints to within one in the ninth. Then with the tying run on second, a “you make the call” play at first was ruled an out and the Angels ascended to victory.
Saints 050 410 022 14 Angels 020 414 13x 15
knotted the score, then a bases loaded walk and an RBI each by Mark Curran and Merrill Clark put the Northstars in the driver’s seat.
The PBA Blues picked up one more run in the bottom of the inning on DiPasquale’s RBI single. However, despite several spectacular defensive plays by PBA in the sixth, the Northstars retaliated for three runs to stretch their lead to 1712.
The knockout punch came in the seventh when Northstar pitcher Rick Frank, who picked up the win, dazzled the crowd with a mouthopening grand slam into the woods.
Berkeley Heights PBA added the final runs in the bottom of the seventh when Mike Delia ripped a sizzling tworun single.
The Northstars advanced to face 162 Bellariva Pizzeria of New Providence in the semifinal round.
SPF Youth 9s Drop Two in Tournament
The Scotch PlainsFanwood Youth Baseball Association 9yearold tournament team was eliminated from the Babe Ruth State tournament. SPF fell, 64, to Mt. Olive on July 22 and, 72, to Elmwood Park on July 23.
Against Mt. Olive, the Raiders got some exceptional pitching from Michael Klotz, Jimmy Burke and William Hubbard. First baseman Steven Berger had an outstanding game defensively by recording 12 putouts. The Raiders just could not generate much offense as they managed only five hits. Kevin Maroney, Michael Ruzek and Berger each picked up a hit while Klotz collected two. Colin Grimm swiped two bases and turned in a good defensive effort.
The Raiders again got an outstanding pitching performance from James Wheeler and Hubbard against Elmwood Park. However, again, the offense was lacking. Thomas Holt, Joseph Del Prete, Jackson Udelsman, Maroney, Hubbard and Wheeler got the only hits. Defensively, third baseman Greg Zabel turned in another good performance as did Tyler Della Badia from his outfield position.
