Everyone, except perhaps atheists, pray at some time or other. Many no doubt pray only when things go awry, when some tragedy strikes or when there is something they feel they need or want badly. Some may plead, or beg; some proposition God or make foolish threats.

How I know this is true is because that is what I once did. When there was something I really wanted, I would ask God to give it to me or make it happen and then if my heart’s desire wasn’t forthcoming, I would “make a deal” with God and promise to do something especially good.

There were many times when what I had prayed for that seemed so right to me did not happen. Did God not hear me? Did He not know of my plight? Did He not care? I hadn’t yet learned that we don’t talk and bargain with God as we would with another human being. I didn’t realize then that He might have a higher and better plan for me and that God is the giver of all good.

If God is the giver of all good, does that mean we will never have trials? Of course we will. Trials are what help us to grow. Think of Daniel who was put in the lion’s den, or the three Hebrews who were put in a fiery furnace or the Shunammite woman’s son who had died, but always their faith in God brought them through.

And think of Jesus who, knowing that he was about to be put to death, prayed for that cup to pass from him, but then prayed for God’s will to be done. What a trial that must have

The Power of Prayer Is Our Path To Happy and Harmonious Life

been but what glory was His in the resurrection.

Those of us who are parents love our children and want only what is best for them. But that doesn’t mean giving and doing whatever their childheart wants. Children depend on loving parents to use wisdom and discretion, and so it is with God.

There was a time in my life when things seemed to go from bad to worse. Fortunately, by then I had come to know God as my loving Father. Instead of pleading, I knew I could rely on Him, not to give me things, but to show me the way.

For a while, it was not easy; it was an uphill struggle, but little by little my situation improved and I was ultimately in a place far better than I could ever have imagined for myself.

I can see so clearly now that in His wisdom, God did not make my way easy (which, of course, is what I would have liked) but I had much to learn. Through all the striving and challenges, I became a better and stronger person and came to know I could always trust and rely on my loving FatherMother God.

Needless to say, I no longer plead, no longer proposition God. I know and have proved countless times that if I am willing and listen for His direction, and do His will rather than my own, my life will be happy and blessed.

Prayer should be an integral part of our lives and not reserved for some dire situation. To my sense, the highest prayer we can offer is to live the very best we can, to follow the Ten Commandments, The Golden Rule, to be grateful for all the blessings we have and above all, to love God and our fellow man.

That is my desire and I know many, many times I fall short, but I also know that God knows what is in my heart and will help me.

Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, has given us a prayer, The Daily Prayer, which seems appropriate for people of all faiths to pray:

“Thy kingdom come,” let the reign of divine Truth, Life and Love be established in me and rule out of me all sin, and may thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind and govern them.

Jesus gave us The Lord’s Prayer, a prayer that affirms God’s goodness, his everpresent love and care for all his beloved children.
