ter. Mariani finished it with a tworun single to center. However, the full eclipse came in the fourth when Marian darkened the Valley with an ominous 13 runs. Jason Scavalla doubled, Craig O’Connor ripped an RBI double off the screen, Arrigo had an RBI single and Chris Love bashed a tworun homer over left.

Nielsen started again with a double off the screen, Malta thumped an RBI single and Roof ripped an RBI triple. An RBI single by Ruban, an RBI triple by Mariani and an RBI double by Zakovic followed. O’Connor punched an RBI double,

Arrigo added an RBI single then Love shattered the skies with a towering tworun homer over the center field fence.

The void in the Valley bats continued but Marian added two more in the fifth. Roof, Mariani and Zakovic all walked, Roger Love tapped an RBI single to center and Jason Scavalla walked to add another run.

Highlighted by an outstanding over the head catch by Ruban at first in the sixth, the silence of the Valley bats remained until game’s end.

Sun Valley 300 0 00 0 3 Marian 214 (13) 20 x 22

Mike Nelson walked and Delia drilled an RBI single.

The pumpedup Delia with a “Come on you guys, I’m giving you a chance”, was thrilled in the eighth when Countryman answered with a single and stole second on sheer aggressiveness. Finally, in what was perhaps the most intense moment of the game, Mathis delivered the winning RBI on a 32 count, with a lazer up the middle.

Mathis commented, “This was big for us, having to fight back the entire game. We never give up, never, that’s our attitude.”

Gary Del Duca, the Outstanding Defensive Player, added, “They had some very solid pitching, but we had the better hitters when it counted.”

Westfield lost 76 to Toms River South on July 10 in a nonleague game as Tom’s River scored three times in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Geissler took the loss despite a fine, seveninning outing. Josh Ludmer had two RBI and Mark Kolvites (sac fly), Blair Richardson (triple) and Mike Sofka (single) all had an RBI. Ludmer had the defensive play of the game throwing out Tom’s River’s AllStater Jeff Frazier on an attempted steal of second on a perfect throw.

Kolvites pitched 3 1/ 3 innings of solid relief, allowing one run on one hit to register an 119 win over Summit on July 12. Brian Flynn and Ludmer each had tworun homers, while Jay Cook was 4for4. Flynn, Ludmer, Mike Duelks and Sofka had two hits apiece with Sofka scoring three times.

Westfield swept a doubleheader from Union, 82, and, 126, on July 14, ruining Union’s chance to capture first. The losses dropped Union to 196 while

Westfield upped their record to 175. In the opener Geissler pitched six strong innings allowing two runs on four hits, striking out six and only yielding one walk. Cook pitched the seventh for the save. Single RBI were recorded by Duelks (2 singles), Brett Picaro (3 walks, 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases), Ben Koket, Blair Richardson and Cook. Flynn added a single and a double.

In the nightcap, Cook, who pitched a complete game, had seven RBI on a single, double and a homerun. Flynn had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored while Picaro had a single, a double, two walks and three runs scored. Jim McKeon and Ryan MacDonald each scored twice as the first four batters scored 11 of the 12 runs.

The Union County American Legion Coaches selected Flynn, Duelks, McKeon and Picaro to play in this year’s AllStar game which was played in Union on July 7. Also receiving votes were Cook and MacDonald.

Flynn had an RBI single, while McKeon and Duelks each pitched an inning in the losing cause. Picaro, who had been sidelined for five games, did not play.
