Cobras Capture U17 Tampa Sun Bowl Finalist Trophy
Defender Matt Andrews (Clark), goalkeeper Brad Lowyns (Scotch Plains), defender Conner Mulvee (Westfield) and their teammates on the Chatham Cobras U17 boys soccer team capped a successful season by earning the U17 finalist trophy at the postChristmas Tampa Sun Bowl in Tampa, Fla.
Although the Cobras lost the championship match to the Dallas Texans, their strong tournament performance at this premier college showcase event showed that the Cobras are among the top U17 teams in the country.
Significantly, the Cobras’ Tampa victories over the Minnesota, New York, South Carolina, and Texas state champions, along with last year’s Ohio state champion included wins over the pretournament, nationally top 10ranked West Babylon Panthers (New York) and American Stars (Texas).
The Cobras, coached by Mark Shearer, finished 1999 strong and started the year strong as well. Last spring, as an U16 team playing against players up to three years older in the top U19 flight of the midNew Jersey Soccer Association, the
Cobras won both the U19 Olympic flight and the overall U19 championship. At the Columbia Invitational Tournament in Columbia Maryland over the Memorial Day weekend, the Cobras competed as a U16 team and defeated the Alabama, Georgia and Connecticut state champions.
In June, the Cobras won the U16 championship at the Kirkwood Invitational Tournament in Kirkwood, Del., following a host of victories over topflight teams, including dominating wins over the Cobras’ regional rivals Mercer United (New Jersey) and Kirkwood Blast (Delaware). In early August, the Cobras competed successfully as a U16 team against Europe’s top U16 teams at the Manchester International Youth Festival in Manchester, England.
Following the conclusion of the fall high school soccer season, the Cobras regrouped to train for Tampa and won all five of their U17 MidAtlantic Premier Soccer League matches in early and midDecember. The Cobras allowed only four goals over those five matches, while scoring 17 goals against their MAPS league opponents.

Jacobi had his best game of the season with 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Jeff Bell had a strong game with nine points and six rebounds.
