Defense and fast breaks did it again for the Union Catholic High School girls basketball team as they deiced the Hillside girls, 5420, in Hillside on January 4. Viking junior Shrita Smith melted the Comets with a 16point offensive blaze, while grabbing four steals and donating three assists.

True to their fashion, the Viking defense stuck close to the Comets, redirecting their course away from the basket, and came up with an 112, first quarter lead. Offensive shyness in the second quarter sent both teams to the locker room, with the Vikings leading 187 at the half.

The Vikings’ offense burned the Comets’ defense in the second half while their defense continued to maintain a chill on the Comets’ offense. Scoring nearly at will, the Vikings outscored the Comets, 3613.

Eleven Vikings got into the scoring frenzy. Jackie Huber and Tammy Colangelo, who led in rebounds with five, each scored seven points while

Jill Sinnott and Stephanie Green both added six points and three rebounds. Senior Jen Schultz had four points, three steals and three assists and Andrea Keller contributed four rebounds. Adding to the offensive assault were Kenyall Johnson, Hope Loeffler, Melinda Rosado and Amanda Kelly with two points apiece.

The Vikings boosted their record to 41 while the Comets, led by Krystal Franklin and Cuteia Odom, who both had six points, crashed to 05.

ball in the third quarter and bounced back to outscore the Raiders 149 to trail by only two points.

Jesenia Gonzalez came to life in the second half and scored seven points followed by Manahan with six while Thornton and Cusimano hit four each and Kristen Leonardis, Carolyn Matthews and Griffeth added two apiece to give the Blue Devils their 3837 lead into the waning seconds.

“In the third quarter we made some changes. We went into a fullcourt press,” said Marino. “And that seems to be our strength. When we go into that, teams have a difficulty beating us. And that is where we came back on them.”

With about 20 seconds remaining, LaForge hit a free throw but the Blue Devils still had opportunities. Another missed Blue Devil layup was rebounded by the Raiders. LaForge

was fouled, then went to the line and hit the goahead point. With eight seconds remaining, the Blue Devils took another shot but missed, finishing with a dismal 32.4 field goal percentage and a 26.7 threepoint conversion percentage.

“We were cold,” claimed Marino. “It just wasn’t meant to be.”

“We did not shoot too well from the foul line,” commented Homm. “We were 418 before Kellie hit her two shots.”

Cusimano led the Blue Devils with four steals, Gonzalez had three steals and three assists, Griffeth blocked three shots and Matthews had three assists.

“Both teams played really well,” said Homm. “We were fortunate to win.”

The Blue Devils slipped to 23 and the Raiders elevated their record to 42.

MARCANTONIO, WILLIAMS REMAIN UNDEFEATED

Hornets, Mustangs Maneuver G. L. Highlander Wrestlers

By FRED LECOMTE

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

The Manville Mustangs maneuvered their way to a 4235 victory over the Governor Livingston High School wrestling team on January 5 in Manville before a packed and enthusiastic wrestling crowd, then the Highlanders fell to a strong, 30, Hanover Park Hornets squad, 5120, on January 6. Highlander seniors

Tim Marcantonio at 160 and Fred Williams at 189 both grabbed two victories to remain undefeated.

The anticipated matchups between Marcantonio and Mustang Drew Corselli as well as Williams and Austin Malinchus at 189 never materialized as both coaches juggled their lineups seeking a possible advantage. The eventual winner of the match was determined when Mustang heavyweight Mike Kelman de feated Highlander Tom Robina.

Highlander Mike Fullowan (74) at 112 displayed determination and confidence while having his way over Ralph McGuiness scoring an impressive, 172, technical fall.

“Generally my plan calls using speed and aggressiveness for the takedown, taking him to his back with the arm bar or a half,” said Fullowan.

SMITH NETS 15, HUBER GETS 8

Lady Vikings Sedate Lion Cagers, 4025 By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Shrita Smith and Jackie Huber struck early and helped the Union Catholic High School girls basketball team quiet the Roselle Catholic Lions, 4025, in Scotch Plains on January 6. Smith also hit big in the final quarter, neutralizing a third quarter Lion roar, to lead all scoring with 15 points.

Huber and Smith hit six and five points, respectively, and Tammy Colangelo added two to give the Vikings a 135 first quarter lead. Effective hustling put the Vikings ahead, 80, within the first three minutes before Melissa Evans put the Lions on the scoreboard with a layup followed by a free throw.

Sloppy play and missed passes on the part of both teams dominated the second quarter. Smith, Huber, Kenyall Johnson and Stephanie Green hit two points apiece for the Vikings and Emily Griffith hit a threepointer for the only Lions’ score as the Vikings carried a 218 lead into the locker room.

Johnson began the second half, showing her athleticism by driving toward the basket, faking a pass, then sinking a layup. Smith hit a jumper from the right side, then Hope Loeffler stole the ball and hit a layup. Johnson followed with a threepointer to push the lead to 3011 midway through the quarter, but the Vikings went flat.

Lion K. K. Forster hit a twopointer followed by a threepointer, then Evans struck for two and Caitlin Mahoney added a layup to narrow

the score to 3019 but Lisa Mortkowitz revived the Vikings somewhat with a two pointer. Forster added a layup prior to the buzzer.

“We got out to a big run early,” commented Viking Head Coach Kathy Matthews. “We got up by 19, but we got sloppy on defense. We tried to make steals and missed. At the same time RC ran off eight points. So, I called time out to settle us down.”

Early in the fourth, the Lions narrowed the score to 3223 but the sealer came when Smith nailed twostraight jumpers. Colangelo followed with two and Smith added two more. Forster hit for two to finalize the scoring.

The Vikings hit 1843 field goals for a 42 percent average. Huber finished with eight points and one rebound and Johnson had seven points, three steals, three assists and three rebounds while Smith also led the Vikings with six rebounds and six steals. Mortkowitz had four rebounds and three steals and Colangelo added two assists, two rebounds and one steal.

“We are still getting used to each other. We are going to sub and sub and sub,” said Matthews who is hovering around the 460 career victory mark in her 24 years at Union Catholic. “That is how we do it. When you play a lot of kids it can cause some problems. We take pride in our defense and try to hold all teams under 30 points.”

The Vikings, still quite young, lifted their record to 61 while the Lions skid to 15.

Mustang Mike Markowitch in an exciting bout. Matkowich held a 21 edge after the first period, then a 31 edge after the second. Regenye narrowed the score 32 on an escape. With just 0: 35 remaining, Markowitch’s reverse followed by Regenye’s escape gave the Mustang a 53 victory.

The Mustangs held a 3635 lead as Kelman and Robina (73) met a center mat. Robina nearly finished Kleman with a cradle but the buzzer to end the second period blared. Entering the third, Robina had a 71 lead, but the action picked up big time; however, Robina still had a 127 lead. With just five seconds remaining, Kelman

pinned Robina for the victory. At Hanover Park, the young Highlanders had a rough road. Marcantonio and Williams both undefeated at 90, continued their winning ways in impressive fashion. Freshmen Tim Vanderveer and Shawn Coughlin recorded pins for Governor Livingston.

Vandeveer (73) at 103 outclassed Chad Cresibene using the cradle, taking just 30 seconds for the fall. Marcantonio enjoyed himself with a 171, technical fall over Will Rinaldi in 2: 32.

Williams had his hands full with J. J. Geiger and had a slim 21 margin after two periods. Ahead just 54 in the third, Williams made it decisive as he reversed Rinaldi to win 74.

The most exciting bout of the evening demonstrated that toughness prevails as 215 lb. Coughlin pinned John George 22 seconds into the second period. “My opponent relied solely on the headlock,” said Coughlin. “On each attempt, I got my hips out so he couldn’t roll me, then I simply reversed it, took him to his back.”

Hanover Park coach Scott Evelind, satisfied with the Hornets performance commented, “It’s nice to see their performance out here is a reflection on how they have been practicing. We work on speed, shots, reshooting while trying to take advantage of people. That all seems to be coming together.”
