Dr. Joan Merel, 67, Retired Teacher; Was Hadassah’s Woman of the Year

Anna Stern, 91

Anna Stern, 91, a resident of the Senior Citizen Housing in Westfield, died on Thursday, February 3, in the Westfield Network, Genesis ElderCare Center in Westfield. She would have turned 92 years old on Monday.

Born in Potunov, Poland, she was orphaned as a child and came alone to the United States in 1920. She lived with relatives in NewYork City, eventually supporting herself as a garment worker.

A homemaker after her marriage, she had been a resident of Manhattan beforemoving toWestfieldfouryears ago.

She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Copeland J. Stern, in October of 1994.

Surviving are a son, Gerald L. Stern of Brooklyn; a daughter, Renee C. Schleifer ofWestfield; four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

A gravesideservicewasconducted by Kehila Chapels of Brooklyn on Sunday, February 6.

Margaret Cox, 82

Margaret Cox, 82, a former area resident, died on Wednesday, February 16, in the Wayne Woodlands Manor Nursing Home in Waymart, Pa.

Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Scotch Plains and in Jamesburg before moving to Waymart in 1996.

Mrs. Cox had been an executive secretary for the Hoffman Beverage

in Newark for many years before retiring in 1974.

She was a graduate of the Drake Business School in Elizabeth.

Services were held on Friday, February 18, in the James W. Conroy Funeral Home in South Plainfield. Interment took place in Hollywood Memorial Park in Union.

Robert M. Koppenhoefer, 90, Received Award From Leather Chemists

Charles J. Dodge, 6th, 56, Executive; President of Mortgage Company

Dr. Joan Merel, 67, of Basking Ridge died on Thursday, February 17, at home.

Born in Philadelphia, she had lived in Hackensack,Verona andWestfield

before moving to Basking Ridge five years ago.

Dr. Merel had been a teacher with theVeronaschool systemfor29years before retiring in 1995.

She was a member of Hadassah in Westfield, where she was voted Woman of the Year in 1999.

She earnedherbachelor’s,master’s and Doctoral degrees in education, all from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Dr. Merel also was a volunteer at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside.

Surviving are her husband, Lee Merel; a brother, Roy Blumenthal, and a grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, February 18, from the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.Interment wasatMountLebanon Cemetery in Iselin.

Charles Joseph Dodge 6th, 56, of Westfield died on Saturday, February 19, at home.

Born in New Brunswick, he had lived in Washington, Boston and Philadelphia before moving to Westfield 27 years ago.

Mr. Dodge was President of the Cronheim Mortgage Company in Chatham for 27 years. He also owned the Moorehouse Corporation, a construction company in Somerville.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from Rutgers University in New Brunswick in 1965 and a master’s degree in business administration from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in 1973.

Mr. Dodge served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era.

He was on the Board of Trustees of theFirst RealEstateInvestmentTrust Company, Hekemian & Company Inc. and the Cheshire House.

He was also a member of the Mortgage Bankers Association, the International Council of Shopping Centers and the Plainfield Country Club and a former member of the Appraisal Institute.

Surviving are his wife, Susan Dodge; a son, Charles Joseph Dodge, 7th of Westfield; a daughter, Shannon Elizabeth Dodge of Boston; his mother, Grace Metler of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a brother, Gregory Francis Dodge of New Brunswick, and a sister, Gail D. Erath of Pennington.

A Mass was offered on Tuesday, February 22, in St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield, following the funeral from the Higgins andBonner EchoLakeFuneralHome in Westfield. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Robert M. Koppenhoefer, 90, died atVillage on the Green in Longwood, Fla. on Saturday, February 19.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 4, 1909, he had lived in Westfield for 20 years before relocating to central Florida in 1986.

A chemical engineer in the petroleum industry,Mr.Koppenhoeferwas a Past President of the American Leather Chemists Association, from whichhe receivedtheALSOPAward. He was also a member of the American Chemical Society.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Koppenhoefer; a son, Kenneth R. Koppenhoefer of Kissimmee, Fla.; a daughter, Karen K. Castelloes of Casselberry, Fla., and three grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at

a date to be announced at the Village on the Green. Interment will take place at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Woodlawn Carey Hand Funeral Home in Longwood, Fla.

Betty Klein, 74, St. Paul’s Parishioner; Charter Member of Quilters Club

James P. Coffey, 45

James P. Coffey, 45, died on Saturday, February 19, at his home in Cranford.

Born in East Orange, he lived most of his life in Cranford.

Mr. Coffey had been employed as a supervisor at Polychrome in Clark for the past 20 years.

He was predeceased by his mother, Patricia “Tecia” Kearney Coffey, in 1996.

Surviving are his father, James R. Coffey of Scotch Plains; a brother, John J. Coffey of Midlothian, Va., and a sister, Janice Bonavita of Stillwater.

Funeral services were held yesterday, February 23, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a Mass at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Mary Lahn, 86

Mary Lahn, 86, a former area resident, died on Wednesday, February 16, in Hollywood, Fla.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, she had lived in Tokyo and in Mountainside before moving to South Florida more than 30 years ago.

A commercial artist, Mrs. Lahn had produced newspaper advertisements in the 1930s for NewYork City department stores including Macy’s and Lord & Taylor.

She wrote and illustrated an “about town” column in the American Advertiser in Tokyo until being forced to leave Japan with other Americans prior to World War II.

She earned a degree in art from the Pratt Institute in New York City, whereshewon theSt.GaudensMedal for art.

Surviving are a son, Richard Lahn; a stepdaughter, Jean Balinsky; a brother, Morris Warshawer, and two grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction ofthe FredHunterFuneralHome, Hollywood.

Ed Woike, 56

EdWoike, 56,ofHillsboroughdied on Sunday, February 20, at his home.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was a formerresident ofWestfield.Helived in Hillsborough since 1974.

Mr.Woikewas employedasastock broker with Financial Network in Edison since 1995.

A selfemployed registered financial planner since 1990, he founded the Liquiflo Company in Warren, a division of Picut Manufacturing, in 1972. He continued with the company until 1982.

He was a graduate of Pennington Prep in Pennington and of Westfield High School. Mr. Woike also attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford.

Hewasa memberoftheHunterdon Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving are his wife, Judith Woike.

Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, February 23, at the Hillsborough Funeral Home in Belle Mead.

Robert A. Sale, 46

RobertA.Sale, 46,ofScotchPlains died on Saturday, February 19, at home.

Born in the Bronx, he had been a longtime resident of Fanwood before relocating to Scotch Plains four years ago.

Mr. Sale was an honor student in the Union County College Nursing Program.

Surviving are a daughter, Victoria Sale; his parents, Nicholas and Rose Sale, and a sister, Doreen Mondi.

The funeral was held yesterday, Wednesday, February 23, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a Mass at St. Bartholomew theApostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.

Memorial donations may be made to the Scotch Plains Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Fanwood Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Raymond D. Moore, 51

Raymond D. Moore, 51, of Toms River died on Thursday, February 17, in University Hospital in Newark.

Born in Newark, he had lived in Hillside and Scotch Plains before moving to Toms River in 1969.

Mr. Moore was the owner and proprietor of Moore & Garvey Inc. in Bayville and of Derflinger Roofing in Whiting.

He graduated from Monmouth College in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in history.

Surviving are his wife, Susan Moore; two sons, Michael Moore and Douglas Moore; a daughter, Lyndsey LaBrutto; his mother, Susan Mallinson Moore; a brother, Gregory Moore; a sister, Susan Tatum, and two grandchildren.

Services were held on Tuesday, February 22, in the CarmonaBolen Home for Funerals in Toms River.

Elouise Hammond, 74

Elouise S. Hammond, 74, of South Plainfield died on Thursday, February 17, in the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison.

Born in Burlington, N. C. on September 29, 1925, she had lived in Scotch Plains for several years before moving to South Plainfield 31 years ago.

Mrs. Hammond, a professional musician, had been the organist and Choir Director of the Wesley United Methodist ChurchinSouthPlainfield for 24 years before retiring in 1993. She also was the organist at the Mundy Funeral Home in Dunellen for more than 20 years.

She was a member of the Plainfield Area Children’s Choir Festival for many years and served with the United Way of Scotch Plains for 22 years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph T. Hammond, in 1983. Surviving are a son, Joseph T. Hammond, 3rd of Berryville, Ark.; a daughter, Melinda Anne Hammond of South Plainfield; a sister, Ione EulissofBurlington, N.C.;twobrothers, Merrimon Cheek of Burlington and Richard Cheek of Salisbury, N. C., and seven grandchildren.

Services were held on Tuesday, February 22, in St. Francis Episcopal Church of Dunellen.

Arrangements were handled by the Mundy Funeral Home.

Betty Klein, 74, of Denville died on Friday, February 18, at St. Claire’s Hospital in Dover.

Born and raised in Ashdown,Ark., she relocated to Albany, N. Y., in 1946. She had lived there for about 10 years, in Calvert City, Ky. for another 10 years and in Westfield for 32 years before recently moving to Denville.

Mrs. Klein was a member of Saint Paul’s EpiscopalChurchinWestfield, where she was a charter member of

the Quilters Club. Surviving are her husband, Robert T. Klein; four sons, Michael Klein of Hillsborough, Kenneth Klein of McLean, Va., Richard Klein of Lafayette, Calif. and David Klein of Akron, N. Y.; a daughter, Barbara Kennedy of Denville; a sister, Mary Pope of Prescott, Ariz., and eight grandchildren.

A memorial funeral service will be held on 2: 30 p. m. tomorrow, Friday, February 25, at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p. m. and from 6 to 8 p. m. today, Thursday, February 24, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Born in South Plainfield, Mr. Herbst had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Bridgewater 20 years ago.

Mr. Herbst had been a machinist formorethan 30yearsatBridgewater Engineering before retiring 16 years ago.

Marie Piegari, 77, of Westfield died on Thursday, February 17, in Union Hospital in Union.

Born in Newark, she lived in Westfield for 39 years.

Mrs. Piegari was a member of the Rosary Altar Society of St. Helen’s Roman CatholicChurchinWestfield.

She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony J. Piegari; a sister, Rose Crisatulli, and a brother, Joseph Di Leo.

Surviving are three daughters, Mary Ann Fela, Bonita Herrmann andSandraDe Grande;asister,Adele Parratt; two brothers, George Di Leo and Frank Di Leo; three grandchildren and a greatgrandchild.

John Hoffmeyer, 72, Reserve Captain; Was Retired From Chevron Shipping

John Thomas Hoffmeyer, 72, of Hendersonville, N. C., died on Tuesday, February 8, in Mission Hospital in Asheville, N. C.

Born on November 15, 1927 and raised in Manhattan, he was the son of the late Carl Julius and Bridget MaryArthur Hoffmeyer.Hehadlived in Westfield before moving to Hendersonville.

Mr. Hoffmeyer retired from Chevron Shipping of PerthAmboy in 1987 after 30 years of service.

He graduated in 1949 from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy. While a cadet, he sailed on Liberty Ships at the end of World War II and was aboard the ship that evacuated the Lippinzer Stallions from Europe to prevent them from falling into Communist hands.

Hebeganhis careerwiththeUnited States Navy teaching Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, R. I., in 1954. He attained the rank of Captain with the United States Naval Reserve in 1969 and retired in 1987.

Mr. Hoffmeyer was active with the Lions Club and the Naval Order of the United States.

He was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Eugenie T. Hoffmeyer, in

1990. Surviving are two daughters, Eugenie Hoffmeyer of Essex, Conn. andAdele Hoffmeyer of Ridgewood; a son, Frederick Hoffmeyer of Mobile, Ala., and four grandchildren.

Robert H. Tullis, Jr., 74, Attorney, Executive and Decorated Veteran

Robert H. Tullis, Jr., 74, of Groton Long Point, Conn. died on Wednes day, February 9, at home.

Born in Flushing, N. Y. on May 31, 1925 and raised in Long Island, he was the son of Robert H. and Dor othy Copelof Tullis. He had lived in Westfield beforerelocatingtoGroton Long Point in 1982.

A graduate of Hofstra College and Harvard Law School, Mr. Tullis had practiced law for three years with the firm of SimpsonThacher and Bartlett of New York.

After moving to Longmeadow, Mass., he became General Counsel of the Springfield Fire and Marine Insurance Company in Springfield, Mass.

When that firm sold its business to the Home Insurance Company of NewYork he went with the company in New York as Associate General Counsel. He retired as President and Chief Executive Officer.

Following his retirement from Home Insurance, Mr. Tullis served as Provost of The College of Insur ance in New York for three years.

While in New York, he was Vice Chairman of the American Insur ance Association, a Director of the Downtown Lower Manhattan Asso ciation and a Trustee of Beekman Downtown Hospital, The College of Insurance and the Williston Northhampton School of setts.

After relocating to Connecticut, he served at various times as dent and as a Director of the Groton

Long Point Association; Chairman of the Board of Deacons of the Mys tic Congregational Church and Presi dent of the Board of Trustees of the Mystic & Noank Library.

Mr. Tullis served with the United States Army’s 104th Infantry (Timberwolf) Division in Europe during World War II. He participated in the crossings of the Roer and Rhine rivers, the capture of Cologne and the final campaign across many. He was awarded the Purple

Heart and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.

Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Agnes Stanton, whom he mar ried in Amsterdam, N. Y. on July 3, 1954; two sons, Robert S. Tullis of Melrose,Mass. andJonathanF.Tullis of Welches, Ore.; a daughter, Mary T. Engvall of North Canton, Conn.; a sister, Elizabeth T. Hagen of Vienna, Va., and eight grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted on Monday, February 14, at the Mystic Congregational Church, fol lowed by interment at the Elm Grove Cemetery, also in Mystic.

Stanislawski, 75, Navy Veteran; Had Worked for Turnpike Authority

Stanley Stanislawski, 75, a life long resident of Bayonne, died on Wednesday, February 9, in the Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network, in Westfield.

Mr. Stanislawski had been em ployed by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority as a toll collector on the Bayonne Exchange for more than 30 years.

He was a United States Navy vet eran of World War II.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Alfreda Luscz; a son, Stephen Stanislawski; three brothWednesday, ers, Joseph Stanislawski, Edward StanislawskiandHenryStanislawski, and a sister, Harriet Sullivan.

Surviving are two daughters, Su san Petrow of Maryland, formerly of Westfield,and CarolCollinsofClark; a sister, Barbara Wirth of Teaneck, and six grandchildren.

A Mass was held on Saturday, February 12, at the Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Bayonne, followed by burial at the Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.

Arrangements were under the di rection of the Z. Dzikowski & Son Funeral Home in Bayonne.

Earl Eaton Bach, 88

Earl Eaton Bach, 88, of Mantoloking died on Monday, FebStanley ruary 14, at Berkshire Medical Cen ter in Lenox, Mass.

Born in Philadelphia, he had lived in Westfield before moving to Mantoloking in 1956.

Mr. Bach had been a pilot for United Airlines from 1942 until his retirement in 1971. He was also a stockbroker at Talco Inc. in Roslyn, MassachuLong Island.

He was a founding member of the OXS Flying Club and of the Airline PresiPilots Association and a member of

the Air Transportation Safety Board, the Bay Head Yacht Club, St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Bay Head and the Jersey Aero Club.

Survivingare hiswife,AlyceBach; three stepsons, Joseph V. Wolfersberger of Point Pleasant Beach, Roger Wolfersberger of UpBridgewater land, Calif. and Scott Wolfersberger of Marlboro; seven stepgrandchil dren and two stepgreatgrandchil dren.

Elaine M. Keets, 74, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, February 19, in Muhlenberg Regional Medi cal Center in Plainfield.

Originally from Plainfield, she had been a Supervisor of Central Supply with Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center for 34 years before retiring in 1995.

Surviving are a son, Gaylord G. Keets; two sisters; a brother; four grandchildren, five greatgrandchil dren and two greatgreatgrandchil dren.

Services were held yesterday, Wednesday,February 23,inSt.John’s Baptist Church in Scotch Plains.

Arrangements were under the difollowing rection of the Plinton Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.
