Gertrude Conroy, 89

Gertrude “Jerry” Mattson Conroy, 89, of Boca Raton, Fla., died on Sunday, February 6, in The Quadrangle in Haverford, Pa.

Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Westfield for 27 years before moving to Florida 20 years ago.

During her residency in Florida, Mrs. Conroy helped to establish the South East Florida Alzheimers Association and was Treasurer of the Golden Harbour Yacht Club.

She was a lifetime member of the Seraphic Society.

Surviving are a daughter, Patricia C. Conn of Haverford, Pa., and two grandchildren.

A gathering of friends to celebrate her life was held on Saturday, February 12, at the home of her daughter.

Arrangements were under the direction of Stuard Funeral Directors in Ardmore, Pa.

Marion Robson, 82

Marion Doerrer Robson, 82, of Greensboro, N. C., died on Monday, February 7, at Well Spring Health Care in Greensboro.

Born on September 16, 1917 in Westfield, she was a graduate of Westfield High School. She had lived in the WestfieldScotch Plains area until 1978, when she relocated to Tequesta, Fla. Mrs. Robson moved to Greensboro in 1997.

She was a homemaker. Surviving are two sons, John Robson of Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Jeff Robson of Greensboro; a brother, Charles Doerrer of Ohio, and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Friday, February 11, in the Well Spring Retirement Community Auditorium in Greensboro.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 Highway 1, North Brunswick, 08902.

Roberta Rumpf, 79

Roberta Rumpf, 79, of Mountainside died on Monday, February 7, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Bridgeport, Conn., Mrs. Rumpf had lived in Elizabeth and Edison before relocating to Mountainside three years ago.

Surviving are a son, Arthur Rumpf; a daughter, Barbara Macpherson, and four grandchildren.

Private services were under the direction of the Gosselin Funeral Home in Edison.

Valda Wygledowski, 71

Valda A. Wygledowski, 71, of Mountainside died on Wednesday, February 9, at home.

Born in Latvia, she came to the United States after World War II. She had lived in South Orange and in Irvington before relocating to Mountainside several years ago.

Surviving are her husband, Stefan Wygledowski; two daughters, Sondra Wygledowski and Beatrice Quinn, and two grandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Saturday, February 12, at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside following the funeral from the Parkway Wozniak Memorial Home in Clark.

Rose Mark, 87

Rose Mark, 87, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, February 10, in the Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains.

Born in Newark, she had lived in Hillside, Irvington and Mountainside before relocating to Scotch Plains five years ago.

Mrs. Mark had worked as a bookkeeper for The StarLedger in Newark before retiring in 1970. Surviving are two sons, Joseph Mark and Dennis Mark, and a sister, Gussie Armm.

Services were held on Sunday, February 13, at the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

James Summers, 68

James Summers, 68, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, February 9, at home.

Born in South Carolina, Mr. Summers had lived in Newark before moving to Scotch Plains 34 years ago.

Mr. Summers had been a supervisor for the American Leather Company in Rahway for many years before retiring in 1993. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are a daughter, Denise Poss; three sons, Gregory C. Summers, James T. Summers and Jason B. Summers; his mother, Emily Davis, and a sister, Willie Cheatham.

Services were held on Monday, February 14, in the Rose of Sharon Community Church of Plainfield.

Arrangements were handled by the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.

Mary Nemiroff, 72

Mary Nemiroff, 72, of Mountainside died on Sunday, February 6, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in New York City, she had lived in Hillside before moving to Mountainside in 1978.

Mrs. Nemiroff had been an executive secretary with Midlantic National Bank in Newark for 23 years before retiring in 1992.

She was a life member of the Union County chapter of B’nai B’rith Women.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph Nemiroff; two sons, Howard Nemiroff and Kenneth Nemiroff; two sisters, Beatrice Katz and Sondra Schuman, and four grandchildren.

Services were conducted on Tuesday, February 8, in the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

Alexander Kitt, 78, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, February 8, at home.

Born in Carteret, he lived in Scotch Plains for most of his life. He was a graduate of Scotch PlainsFanwood High School.

Mr. Kitt had worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lyons for many years before retiring.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years prior to entering the United States Navy in 1942. During World War II, he served on the USS Indiana and the USS North Carolina in the South Pacific.

Twice he was at sea during a torpedoing. Mr. Kitt was a life member of American Legion Post No. 209 and a parishioner of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, both in Scotch Plains.

He was predeceased by two brothers, John Kitt and Michael Kitt. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Kitt; two brothers, George Kitt of Los Angeles and Tymko Thomas Kitt of Bedminster, and five sisters, Julia Richter of Flemington, Mary Prejean of Abbeville, La., Helen Adams of Ethel, La. and Ann Shreiber and Sophie Chaubin, both of Baton Rouge, La.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, February 13, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood. American Legion Post No. 209 also held services on Sunday.

Interment took place at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery at Indiantown Gap in Annville, Pa.

Dorothy Dunn SmithLewis, 87, of Westfield died on Wednesday, February 9, in the Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network in Westfield.

Born in Winchester, Mass. on December 20, 1912, the daughter of Edna Eastman and George Elliot Dunn, she had lived in Westfield and Maine before returning to Westfield many years ago.

Mrs. SmithLewis had been a social worker with the Family and Children’s Society of Plainfield for 25 years before retiring. She specialized in family counseling and adoption services.

She also volunteered with the American Red Cross in assisting with

disaster relief in Kentucky and Massachusetts. Mrs. SmithLewis graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Douglass College in New Brunswick in 1934 and earned a Master of Social Work Degree from the New York School of Social Work, now an affiliate of Columbia University, in 1936.

She was predeceased by her two husbands, Sanford Clarke Smith in 1962 and Gomer Lewis in 1996.

Surviving are two sons, George Smith of Lambertsville and James Smith of Whitefield, Me.; a daughter, Dr. Nancy Naro Watts of Walkington, England; a stepdaughter, Barbara Van Meter of Bridgeton; a stepson, Richard Gary Lewis; a sister, Priscilla Lee of Westfield; six grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 12, in the First United Methodist Church in Westfield. Interment took place at Fryeburg Cemetery in Fryeburg, Me.

Local arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Margie B. Clark, 81, of Fanwood died on Tuesday, February 8, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Storm Lake, Iowa, she had lived in Chicago before moving to Fanwood 21 years ago.

Mrs. Clark had been employed by McGinn Elementary School in Scotch Plains for 12 years before retiring in 1992.

She was predeceased by her hus band, Harry J. Clark, in 1984.

Surviving are a daughter, Jane Lundstrom of Fanwood; a son, Brian J. Clark of Paoli, Pa.; three grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Private funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

James F. Murphy, 52, of Martinsville died on Friday, February 11, in Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx.

Born in Queens, he grew up in Springfield. He had lived in Mountainside before moving to Martinsville 13 years ago.

Mr. Murphy was President of J. Murphy Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc. of Middlesex for the past 23 years.

In 1969, he graduated from Pershing College in Nebraska with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics.

Surviving are Susan Murphy, his wife of 29 years; a son, Patrick Murphy; a daughter, Ellen Murphy,

and a brother, Thomas J. Murphy. A Mass was offered on Tuesday, February 15, in the Blessed Sacrament Church in Martinsville.

The funeral was from the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.

Michael S. Mondoro, 71, of Westfield died on Friday, February 11, at home.

Born in South Plainfield, he had lived in Plainfield before moving to Westfield 21 years ago.

Mr. Mondoro had been a fireman for the Plainfield Fire Department for 28 years before retiring 16 years ago.

He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving from 1946 to 1948.

Mr. Mondoro was a member of the ItalianAmerican Club of North Plainfield.

Surviving are Lillian V. Mondoro, his wife of 21 years; a son, Albert Di Grazia of Manville; a daughter, Georgianna Gladstone of Westfield; three brothers, Dominick Mondoro of Whitehouse Station, John

Mondoro of Middlesex and Joseph Mondoro of Dunellen; a sister, Antoinette Piano of Branchburg; four grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, February 14, in St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery, also in Westfield.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Theresa A. Caprara, 83, of Mountainside died on Thursday, February 10, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Newark, she moved to Mountainside five years ago.

Mrs. Caprara had been a supervisor with the Chase Chemical Company in Newark, where she worked for 15 years before retiring in 1978.

Surviving are her husband, Peter F. Caprara; a daughter, Mary Ann

Capriglione; a son, Philip Caprara; three brothers, Jerry Pagano, Basil Pagano and Biase Pagano; two sisters, Ann Pagano and Sister Nicolina Pagano, and two grandchildren.

A Mass was offered on Monday, February 14, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Newark, following the funeral from the Galante Funeral Home in Union.

Gordon B. Hanford, 80

Gordon B. Hanford, 80, of Lyons died on Wednesday, January 26, in the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center in Lyons.

Born in Brooklyn, he had lived in Westfield before moving to Lyons.

Mr. Hanford graduated in 1956 from Lycoming College in Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in business.

He served as a private first class in the United States Army during World War II.

Surviving is a sister, Margaret H. Schrumpf.

Private services were arranged by the William R. Dangler Funeral Home, Inc. in Summit.

Eva F. Filsinger, 90

Eva F. Filsinger, 90, of Lebanon Township died on Monday, February 14, in the Hunterdon Hills Residential Facility in Lebanon Township.

Born in Bayonne, she had lived in Westfield, Scotch Plains, Brick and Lakewood before moving to Hunterdon Hills last week.

Mrs. Filsinger had been a teacher and librarian in Bayonne many years ago.

She was a graduate of Jersey City State College.

Surviving are Raymond C. Filsinger, her husband of 67 years; a son, Russell C. Filsinger; a daughter, Barbara M. Filsinger, and two grandchildren.

Private services were arranged by the NaughrightScarponi Funeral Home in High Bridge.

Charles A. Macaluso, 67, Honored For Commitment to Environment

Charles Anthony Macaluso, 67, of Tampa, Fla. died on Friday, February 4, in Tampa General Hospital.

Born in New York City, he had lived in Brooklyn, Westfield and Essex Fells before moving to Sarasota, Fla. six months ago.

A pioneer in the waste management industry in New Jersey and Connecticut, Mr. Macaluso was President of New York Caring, a familyowned business in Manhattan.

He was a partner in four restaurants in La Jolla, Calif. during the mid1980s and mid1990s and was named Chief Executive Officer of MICRO Technologies, headquartered in Denver.

Mr. Macaluso received the Governor’s Humanitarian Award from Nelson A. Rockefeller and the Outstanding Man of the Year Award from former New York Governor Hugh Carey for his efforts in environmental conservation.

He was named an Honorary Commissioner of the Environmental Protection Agency of the State of New York, Chairman of the New York Chapter of CHILD (Children with Learning Disabilities), a consultant to the Italian Conservation Department in Rome, Italy, and an honorary mayor of Chelsea, N. Y.

Mr. Macaluso graduated from Seton Hall University in South Orange and from St. John’s Law School in New York.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Macaluso; two daughters, Giancarla Gronikowski and Merrilee Logue; a son, Roy Macaluso; a stepdaughter, Terri Cottrell; two sisters, Maria McDonald and Josephine Macaluso, and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a. m. on Saturday, February 19, in Notre Dame Church of North Caldwell.

Rose White, 81

Rose McCurnin White, 81, of Cranford died on Tuesday, February 15, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Bayonne, she had lived in Roselle for 25 years and Westfield for 20 years before moving to Cranford in 1990.

A homemaker, she was active with the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church parish in Westfield and a member of its Senior Social Club.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Robert A. White; two daughters, Susan Parker and Sister Kathleen White; two sons, Robert P. White and James C. White; three grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a. m. on Friday, February 18, in the Holy Trinity Church. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Friends may visit at the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue in Cranford, today, Thursday, February 17, from 2 to 4 p. m. and 7 to 9 p. m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Benedictine Sisters Monastery Expansion Fund, Emmanuel Monastery, 2229 Joppa Road, Lutherville, Md., 21093.

Edmund C. Allen, 91, Taught Latin; Was Principal of Tamaques School Alexander A. Barbarise, 61, Retired

Alexander A. Barbarise, 61, of Vernon Hills, Ill. died on Sunday, February 13, at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Ill.

Born and raised in Westfield, he had lived in Piscataway for 14 years, Manalapan for seven years and Buffalo Grove, Ill. for seven years before moving to Vernon Hills eight years ago.

Mr. Barbarise had been a Regional Sales Director and trainer for Conseco in Shaumburg, Ill. for seven years before retiring in 1999. Prior to that, he had been employed with Washington National Insurance Company for 25 years as a regional manager in New Jersey and as Director of Training in Evanston, Ill.

He served in the United States Army from 1957 until 1959.

He was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School in Westfield, where he was active in the Boy Scouts and in the Barbershop Quartet.

He held an associate’s degree from Union College in Cranford.

Surviving are his wife, Amy (Sabino) Barbarise; two sons, Brian Barbarise of Englishtown and Kevin Barbarise of Hainesville, Ill.; three daughters, Laura Navas of Round Lake Beach, Ill., Karen Buchholtz of Kenosha, Wis. and Kimberly Magnan of Addison, Ill.; his parents, Anthony and Mary Del Conte Barbarise of Toms River; a sister, Dolores Engel of Aberdeen; three grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

The funeral will take place at 9 a. m. on Saturday, February 19, from the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield, followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 10 a. m. at the Holy Trinity Roman

Catholic Church, also in Westfield. Interment will be at the Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, Ill.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p. m. and from 7 to 9 p. m. today and tomorrow, Thursday and Friday, February 17 and 18 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the NCH Foundation, care of Mary Davis/ Oncology, 800 West Central Road, Arlington Heights, Ill, 60004.

Edmund C. Allen, 91, died on Thursday, February 10, in the Medical Facility of Normandy Farms Estates in Blue Bell, Pa.

Born on August 16, 1908 in Wallingford, Conn., the son of the late Clifton and Elizabeth Fowler Allen, he had lived in Westfield before moving to Normandy Farms Estates in 1984.

Mr. Allen, who began his education career as a Latin teacher at the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., later taught Latin in the Westfield school district until 1952.

He subsequently became an elementary school principal, retiring from Tamaques Elementary School in Westfield in 1971.

Mr. Allen graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. in 1930. He received a master’s degree in education from the Univer sity of Pennsylvania in 1933.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Westfield.

He was predeceased by his wife, Doris Ward Allen, in 1998.

Surviving are a son, Robert W. Allen of Highland, Md.; a daughter, Susan A. Delin of Bedminster Township; five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 11, at 11: 30 a. m. at Normandy Farms Estates, 9000 Twin Silo Drive, Blue Bell, Pa. Interment will be in the First Congregational Church Memorial Garden in Westfield at a date to be chosen by the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, Inc., 1250 Hylan Boulevard, Suite 4B, Staten Island, N. Y., 10305.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Huff and Lakjer Funeral Home in Lansdale, Pa.
