Bells Labs President Dr. Arun Netravali Named To NJIT Board of Trustees
NEWARK — The New Jersey State Senate has confirmed Governor Christine Todd Whitman’s appointment of Dr. Arun Netravali of Westfield, President of Bell Labs, as a member of the Board of Trustees of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).
Mr. Netravali joins 13 other voting members on the governing board of NJIT.
Mr. Netravali, 53, has been with Bell Labs for 27 years and was previously Executive Vice President of Research before being named President in October 1999. Bell Labs, headquartered in Murray Hill, is the largest research and development organization in the world dedicated to communications, with 30,000 employees in 25 countries, and a budget of almost $4 billion.
The organization is the Research and Development unit of Lucent Technologies and laid the foundation of the information age with inventions including the transistor and laser and more recently breakthroughs in communications software and data networking.
Governor Whitman stated, “I thank Dr. Netravali for agreeing to serve on the NJIT Board of Trustees. His experience leading one of the world’s great research and development organizations will be most helpful as the university strives to provide the quality workers and economic development initiatives that New Jersey businesses need to succeed.”
Saul K. Fenster, NJIT President, described Dr. Netravali as one of the world’s leading experts in the field of multime dia communications, and widely recognized
for his technology management expertise.
Dr. Netravali holds more than 70 patents and has authored some 140 papers in the areas of computer networks, human interfaces to machines, picture processing, and digital television. He coauthored three books, one considered today’s bible on video compression: “Digital Pictures Representation and Compression, and two other texts on this subject as well.”
He holds degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology, Rice University in Texas and the École Polytechnique Federale in Switzerland.
Dr. Netravali has been honored with membership in the Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi scientific honor societies, and the U. S. National Academy of Engineering. He also has been named a Fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
He has received numerous awards, including the Alexander Graham Bell Medal of IEEE in 1991, Engineer of the Year Award from the Association of Engineers from India in 1992, the Thomas A. Edison Patent Award in 1996, and Japan’s Computers and Communications Prize in 1997. Last year Lucent Technologies received an Emmy Award for his work on highdefinition television.
Westfield Chamber To Sponsor Cleanup
WESTFIELD — The Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Westfield Corporation will sponsor the “Clean Sweep” project in downtown Westfield on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m.
Mayor Thomas C. Jardim and the Westfield Department of Public Works will be working with the volunteers as everyone pitches in to help clean up the downtown.
Volunteers will be given gloves and garbage bags, and will be assigned to areas that need some sprucing up.
Participants will come to Brand Travel, located at 107 Quimby Street in Westfield, on Saturday, May 6, to receive their cleanup area assignment.
Scout troops, Westfield organizations, school groups, and church and temple groups are all invited to be a part of the “Clean Sweep.” Landlords are invited to join the effort by cleaning up the parking areas and alleyways behind their buildings.
“It’s important for everyone in Westfield to be a part of the ‘Pride in Downtown’ effort to make our downtown look its best,” said “Clean Sweep” Chair Susan Brand.
