SPF Youth Indians Defeat Junior Division Braves, 64 SPF Soccer Cosmos Nudge
SPF Sideliner Boys, 21
The Scotch PlainsFanwood Jazz girls intercity soccer team staged a stirring secondhalf comeback to beat the Cranford Destroyers, 32, in Cranford on April 16.
The Jazz fell behind 20 in the first half but solid goaltending by Maddie Wasser kept situations sane. Toward the end of the half, Jazz striker Lauren Mains was dropped in the penalty area setting up a penalty shot. Mains lined up her shot and whistled a screamer over the Cranford goalie’s head to put the Jazz on the board.
The Jazz came out hot in the second half. Jess McGarry made a whirling midfield fake and sent a pass to right wing Lauren Hercel, who scorched a
shot just a few inches over the cross bar. Luck befell the Jazz when Shannon Hauser sent a long, rolling shot that somehow eluded three Destroyer defenders and the goalie to finally settle into the left corner of the goal to tie the game.
Soon afterwards, Becca McGuire worked the ball into Cranford territory and found Briana Falco who then chipped a pass over two Destroyers to right wing Meaghan Kelly. From what appeared to be an impossible angle, Kelly launched a cruise missile that found the left corner of the net for the goahead goal.
The Destroyers stormed back, but a great cutoff on a breakaway by Jessica Churgin and a sensational save by Bitsy Kipping, preserved the victory for the Jazz.
The Scotch PlainsFanwood Intercity U9 division soccer bragging rights were determined on April 16 when the Cosmos nudged the Sideliners, 21, in a hotly contested and very wellplayed game.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Cosmos jumped to a 10 lead but the Sideliners tied it up in the third quarter on a long kick by Steven Young.
The game looked as though it would end in a tie as both teams’ defenses rose to the occasion to thwart their opponents scoring chances. Throughout the game, players from both teams sacrificed their bodies in an attempt to gain control of the ball. However, as time was running out in the fourth quarter, the Cosmos scored to seal the victory.
The goaltending of Michael Scannell and Andrew Smith was outstanding for
the Sideliners. They always seemed to be there to stop an oncoming shot. Thomas Holt, Joseph Del Prete, Josef Ellis, and Patrick Clancy turned in stellar performances from their forward positions. They kept constant pressure on the Cosmo defense, combining speed and outstanding ball control. Greg Bencivengo, Danny Gore, Brendan McEvoy and Young provided a swarming defense that helped clear the ball out of their zone and breakup many Cosmo scoring opportunities.
The Braves and the Indians of the Scotch PlainsFanwood Youth Baseball Association Junior Division treated their fans to an exciting, wellplayed game on April 15, with the Indians winning 64.
The Braves took a, 10, first inning lead and added three more in the third. Later, the Indians cut the lead to 42.
Then in the top of the sixth, the Indians rallied with four runs. The Braves did put the tying run on in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to score.
The Braves pitching was outstanding. James Wheeler struck out 11 batters in four innings. and Connor Viglianti
notched four while Andrew Barry picked up one. Barry and Joe Sette did outstanding jobs behind the plate while Joseph Del Prete turned in a great performance at second base. Third basemen Paul Longson and Jorge Cruz had a solid game as did outfielders Chris DeCarlo, Danny Michalak and Gailmarie Sprague.
Offensively, Wheeler was oneforone with two RBI. Barry had an RBI single while Neil Merchant chipped in with an RBI. Matt Tenzer, Thomas Reade, Wheeler and Viglianti all scored runs. The Braves were very aggressive on the base paths with Sean Dolgin, Merchant, Wheeler, Barry, Del Prete, Tenzer and Reade all swiping bases.
SPF United Crush Cranford Crusaders
The SPF United soccer team crushed the Cranford Centennial Crusaders, 42, on April 16. Tyler Stanek scored the final two goals to determine the outcome.
In the first half, the United rejected every scoring attempt by the Cougars. Goalie Brandon Reddington blocked everything going his way and Brian Dougher, Brendan Kirby and Evan Aspell were an excellent wall of defense. Timmy Stuart and Ryan Kreuger were relentless in trying to change the direction of the ball but no scoring occurred in the first half.
Things changed after halftime. Jeff Stuart became the goalie and rejected nearly all shots taken on him. On a corner kick by Tommy Sutter, the ball bounced off the post and went in for the first score. Afterwards, the Crusaders scored two perfect goals in the corner of the net.
Later, during a frenzy near the opposing goal, Taylor Molinaro seized the moment and kicked it in for the tie. Then Stanek did his magic with his two perfect goals.

U10 Storm Strikes SPF Strikers, 41
The Scotch PlainsFanwood U10 Strikers suffered a 41 defeat to the North Hunterdon Storm on April 16.
Two early attempts by Jordan Neuhauser on feeds from Kyle Mihansky and Timmy Leischner, just missed the Storm’s net. Keeper Adam Brous made several great saves to keep the first quarter scoreless. But the Storm scored twice in the second quarter.
Mike DeVizio, Jarek Cohen and Eddie Kahn got off many shots on setups by John Guiffre and Brian Hessemer, but the Storm keeper held tight in the second half. Defenders James Dinizo and Rob Cunningham thwarted many Hunterdon attempts to penetrate Striker territory.
Down 30 in the fourth, the Strikers fought back and managed to break through the Storm line, allowing Tommy Hercel to score. Hunterdon responded with another goal just before the final whistle.
