Tamaques Teacher Trista Pollard Awarded Philhower Fellowship A TRIBUTE TO TEACHING… Trista Pollard, a fifth grade teacher at Tamaques Elementary School in Westfield and

the 2000 recipient of the Charles Philhower Fellowship Award, receives congratulations from the President of the Westfield Rotary Club William Bonsall. The Rotary Club sponsors the award. Principal of Tamaques School Michael Cullen, far left, and Superintendent of Schools Dr. William J. Foley were also on hand for the announcement.

WESTFIELD – Trista Pollard, a fifthgrade teacher at Tamaques Elementary School in Westfield, is the 2000 recipient of the Rotary Club of Westfield’s Philhower Fellowship Award in recognition of outstanding teaching at the elementary school level.

William Bonsall, President of the Rotary Club, visited Ms. Pollard in her classroom to announce that she was selected. A formal award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, April 25, at 7: 30 p. m. at Tamaques School, prior to the Board of Education meeting which will be held at the school at 8 p. m.

Included in the nominations received on her behalf were comments from parents who described Miss Pollard as “a very enthusiastic and creative teacher.”

“Another outstanding attribute of Miss Pollard,” wrote a mother of a former and current student, “is her skill in teaching to the various levels of ability in her classroom and to challenge each child accordingly.”

Other nominations on Ms. Pollard’s behalf addressed her infusion of technology into the curriculum.

“Trista’s use of technology has made social studies interesting and meaningful for the class,” wrote one parent. “Her students take ‘inclass field trips’ to explore various parts of the world.”

A parent referred to Miss Pollard as “a teacher in a classroom without

walls or limits. She befriends every child.”

Ms. Pollard was also commended for her “tireless brand of school spirit and enthusiasm.” One parent explained, “Trista acts as a PTO liaison, the advisor for the patrols and she involved herself with the Tamaques Variety Show by choreographing and directing the fifth grade performance. This involves more than six hours each week during rehearsals – volunteer time spent with about 75 10yearolds.”

Extra talents and efforts of Miss Pollard were also cited in her involvement with special projects. She is trained in the math pilot program and is certified in the “Star Lab” program from Liberty Science Center, which she presents to all of the Tamaques student body. She is also a leader in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day observation at Tamaques. One mother noted that, “Trista teaches tolerance, kindness and respect every day.”

Another parent ended her letter of nomination stating, “Trista deserves to be recognized and rewarded for her open and approachable style of teaching, but as far as this parent is concerned, Trista is already a winner.”

Miss Pollard has been teaching at Tamaques since 1993, both in the third an fifth grades. She received

her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Douglass College in 1990 and a Masters Degree in Instruction and Curriculum from Kean University in 1995.

Tamaques School Principal Michael Cullen described Miss Pollard as “an enthusiastic and talented teacher whose dedication to children and learning is a real tribute to the profession and a real asset to our school.”

Superintendent of Schools Dr. William J. Foley congratulated Miss Pollard for becoming the eighth recipient of the Philhower Fellowship and also commended her for her role on the vanguard committee of the Westfield Teacher Institute, where she helps new elementary teachers in classroom management and parent relationships.

Dr. Foley thanked the Rotary for “its recognition of this meaningful profession.”

“The Philhower Fellowship was established in 1993 by the Rotary Club to honor former Westfield educator and Rotarian Charles Philhower and to recognize the importance of teaching in the elementary grades,” explained Mr. Bonsall.

Mr. Philhower, who died in 1962, was supervising principal (superintendent) of Westfield Public Schools for 30 years, from 1917 to 1947, and was cofounder and pastpresident of the Rotary Club of Westfield.

The Philhower selection committee was composed of three Rotarians: Dr. Foley, Kenneth Ciarrocca and Mr. Bonsall, as well as Franklin Elementary School Principal Margaret Dolan and last year’s Philhower Fellowship recipient Eva Morton, a third grade teacher at Washington Elementary School.

Other previous Philhower recipients were Angela LaCarrubba, Claudia Andreski, Bette Tuthill, Carol Joyce, Carol Mastroianni and Susan Feldman Glick.
