cal shape. Perhaps that may have helped!
“It definitely paid off today,” answered Steuerle. “It was definitely much more of a running game and there were a lot of quick goals right off. But they (P i n g r y ) had such a good defense that we actually had to make those goals because we could not set up our plays as much as we wanted.”
The quick scoring on the part of the Blue Devils may have thrown Pingry off its game plan. “I think that was what happened. We started with two quick goals and it allowed our girls to settle in,” commented Steuerle. “And it gave them more confidence.”
When the Pingry girls did get possession of the ball in their own territory, they had trouble getting it down field because of the Blue Devils’ unrelenting aggression.
“Our girls did have some very good checks today,” said Steuerle. “We were very happy with that. They
did a very good job.” But enough about the offense. The Blue Devil defense was quite stingy as they kept Pingry out of range. And when Pingry did get in range, goalie
L i b b y S c h u n d l e r was magnificent and recorded seven great saves.
“L i b b y played quite an excellent ga m e,” pointed out Steuerle. “She had a lot of really good saves. I think that our (defense) girls for the most part stuck tight on their girls.”
S t e u e r l e added, “They (Pingry) had an excellent, excellent, really potent offense. And we had to stay really tight on them. I don’t think that the score really represents how close the game was. I was definitely expecting a closer game. I think that we got fortunate in that some of our shots went in and Libby was so on that she stopped so many of their good shots.”
As to the Blue Devils’ progress, Steuerle grinned then commented, “I would say that we are right on track to where we want to be. We can’t really complain.”

DOYLE KNOCKS IN WINNING RUN
Raider Softballers Stun Cranford Cougars, 54
By DAVID B. CORBIN
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
Freshman Caitlin McNelis pitched her way to her second varsity win as the Scotch PlainsFanwood High School softball team came from behind to defeat the previously unbeaten Cougar girls, 54, in Cranford on April 12. Senior catcher Jen Doyle tapped an RBI single in the top of the sixth to provide the winning margin.
“She did a tremendous job! Especially against a team like Cranford because they are so well coached. But, she was very nervous,” said Raider Head Coach Frank Butz. “It was only her second start. But she did a very good job and gained her composure. She only gave up two walks and she had the team behind her. She got the ball in and changed speeds. She was effective.”
Also helping was that the Raiders discovered a weakness in the Cougar defense and capitalized with eight stolen bases.
“We ran on them. We stole on them,” pointed out Butz.
However the Raiders did do some hitting and got four of them in the top of the first as they took a 30 lead. Doyle singled and stole second, then scored on Katie Church’s double. Megan Miller tapped an RBI single and Kellie LaForge walked and stole
second. Later Miller was thrown out at the plate after a great throw from center field. But Megan Reddington followed with an RBI single.
Cranford scored two in the bottom of the inning with a baseonballs, a single and a tworun double. Later in the fifth, they took a 43 lead, putting together two singles and a hit batter to load the bases then scoring on a missed fielder’s choice and a basesloaded walk.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, Lindsey Pennella walked and stole second and third. Jen Vanderoff rapped an RBI single and dashed to second on a throw. Now, Doyle stepped to the plate and delivered her gamewinning RBI single.
“The kids came prepared,” expressed Butz. “They know it was a big game and they reacted accordingly.”
After defeating both Westfield and Cranford this season, the Raider girls must feel good. “Cranford was ranked third in the county and Westfield is right behind us. To beat both of those teams early in the season is really two nice wins,” said Butz. “It’s very exciting!”
The Raiders boosted their record to 41 while the Cougars slipped to 51.

MAJOCHA WHACKS 2RUN DOUBLE
Eagles’ Late Flight Tops Blue Devil Basemen, 128
By MATTHEW J. SEAGULL
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
A defense plagued with eight errors hindered the Westfield High School baseball team’s chances to put away the game on April 13 as the Edison Eagles rallied to tie the game in the seventh, then went on to win it in the ninth, 128.
The Blue Devils’ defensive woes began somewhat in the first inning when two opportunities to turn double plays were missed, putting more pressure on junior pitcher Nick Geissler. Fortunately, a great play at short by junior Ryan MacDonald, salvaged the inning.
Despite a wicked curve ball by the Eagle pitcher, offensive success began early as the Blue Devils tapped him for two runs in the bottom of the first.
MacDonald was hit by a pitch on his elbow and Brian Flynn reached base safely on an error. Then senior Randy Majocha drilled a tworun double into the rightcenter field gap, scoring MacDonald and Flynn. The minor injury would haunt MacDonald throughout the game until he was eventually taken out.
Two Eagles reached safely on er rors in the second inning and one
eventually scored. A double play and a courageous stop on a hard ground ball by Majocha kept the second runner from scoring.
The Blue Devils upped their lead to 31 the bottom of the inning. Junior Mike Mroz walked and stole a base then was driven in from a single by sophomore Brett Picaro.
Geissler gave up another unearned run the third but still managed to remain dominant, retiring the rest of the side to prevent another Eagle run.
The Blue Devils flew into a fiverun scoring frenzy in the lower half of the third. Majocha walked and stole second. Junior Mike Duelks sliced a hard RBI single to right field. Duelks later scored, then Mroz and sophomores Jay Cook and Jim McKeon reached safely and all managed to trample the plate. Unfortunately, the Blue Devils would never touch the plate again.
The Eagles began to chip away at Geissler with two runs in the fourth, highlighted by a tworun shot over the left field fence. Next, in the sixth, Geissler then yielded a triple and the runner later scored on a wild pitch. Then, in the seventh, Picaro came in on relief to close out the game. Two more Blue Devil errors placed Eagles on the base pads, then Mike Tambini stepped to the plate and blasted a threerun homer to left to knot the score at 88.
The Blue Devils’ bats were silent in the eighth but the Eagles screamed in the ninth with four runs. Duane Wilson hammered a solo homer, Dave Arnowitz ripped a tworun single and another run would follow.
With no thunder remaining in their bats, the Blue Devils exited quietly in the bottom of the ninth. The Eagle soared to 81 while the Blue Devils slipped to 34.
Despite the tough loss, Westfield had a positive outlook. “We played a tough team Thursday, and I thought we played very well against them,” said Geissler.
