Mayor Schundler to Speak At Church on Palm Sunday Reverend McNulty to Lead

Mission Event at St. Helen’s Rev. Frank J. McNulty

WESTFIELD — St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church, located at 1600 Rahway Avenue in Westfield, will conduct a Parish Mission from Mon day through Wednesday, April 10 to

12, beginning at 8 p. m. each evening. The Reverend Frank J. McNulty, the guest presenter, will preach on the general theme, “Lord, Teach Me To Pray.” Each evening’s program will cover a topic related to this theme.

On April 10, Reverend McNulty will focus on reaching out and relating to others with a talk entitled “The Outer Life.”

During “The Inner Circle” on April 11, he will discuss turning loneliness into prayerful solitude and responding to grace from deep within.

The final topic on April 12, entitled “The Daily Life,” will explore how individuals can transform the experiences of being human and the “nitty gritty” of everyday life into a spiritual foundation.

Reverend McNulty resides in Summit and conducts missions and retreats in the area. He has taught moral and pastoral theology at the Immaculate Conception Seminary, was the Vicar for Priests for the Archdiocese of Newark and served as a Pastor.

In 1987, he was selected by the National Council of Catholic Bishops to represent the priests of the United States in an address to Pope John Paul II in Miami.

Reverend Harvey, who conducted his final worship service on March 26, spent nearly 23 years with the parish.

WESTFIELD — Mayor Bret Schundler of Jersey City, a former Westfield resident, will speak at the First United Methodist Church, located at 1 East Broad Street in Westfield, on Palm Sunday, April 16.

Mr. Schundler will speak to all guests from 9: 45 to 10: 45 a. m. on family and Christian values. He will then join the Reverend David Harwood in a dialogue sermon entitled “Conscience” during the 11 a. m. worship service.

A social event, including a church family barbecue, will take place at 12: 15 p. m. following the service.

As Mayor for nearly a decade, Mr. Schundler has dealt with issues ranging

from leading businesses in the metropolitan area to the network of social service agencies charged with meeting the needs of the community.

A former AllState Westfield High School football star, Mayor Schundler won the Cantebury Medal for Religious Freedom for his defense of religious freedoms. He has also volunteered in the past with various groups including a coalition of churches providing shelter to the homeless.

He has studied at the University of Haifa in Israel and graduated from Harvard University with honors. Mr. Schundler and his wife, Lynn, have a daughter, Shaylin, and a son, Hans Otto, 3rd.

Holy Trinity Seniors Reveal Meeting Date, Upcoming Excursions

WESTFIELD — The regular meeting of the Senior Social Club of Holy Trinity will be held on Monday, April 10, at 1: 30 p. m. in the gymnasium of Holy Trinity Elementary School, located at 336 First Street in Westfield

The entrance is on First Street. For easier access, attendees are advised to use the side door to the gymnasium.

The program will feature “The Golden Lights,” a 35voice senior choir from the Evangel Church in Scotch Plains which is known for songs bearing the message of love. Refreshments will be served.

On Tuesday, May 2, a trip is planned to Cape May, where participants will take a trolley ride, among other activities. A luncheon is included.

A trip is planned for Monday, June 19, aboard the Thomas Jefferson, an elegant replica of the paddle steamers which cruised Long Island’s Gold Coast during the 1800s. Participants will have an opportunity to see manors from that era. Lunch will be included.

Cantata Performance To Feature Fred Stiefel

MOUNTAINSIDE — The Community Presbyterian Church in Mountainside will present a performance by its choir of the cantata entitled “The Seven Last Words of Christ” during the worship service this Sunday, April 9. The service will begin at 10: 30 a. m.

First presented at Ste. Clotilde in Paris on Good Friday in 1867, the cantata will be conducted and accompanied on the organ by Lyudmila Syrochkina, Choir Director and church organist.

“What is so special about this performance is that all the baritone solos will be sung by Fred Stiefel, a member of our choir for 40 years and a regular at all of our music events,” said the Reverend Chris Belden.

“The Stiefels are planning to relocate in June, so this is a bittersweet performance for the whole congregation and the choir,” he added.

The performance will be divided into eight parts, with an introduction by solo soprano, followed by performers presenting the final words uttered by Christ on the cross.

The solo work will be performed by choir members Kristy Weeks Boyce, Warren Fristensky, Julie Fristensky, Andrew Hoydich and Laurie Weeks Thomas. All are invited to attend the service.

Rabbi Block to Present Passover Lecture On April 12 at JCC

SCOTCH PLAINS — Rabbi Levi Block of the Union County Torah Center in Westfield will present a special Passover lecture on Wednesday, April 12, at 8 p. m. at the Jewish Community Center of Central New Jersey, 1391 South Martine Avenue in Scotch Plains.

The lecture will address many different commentaries on the Haggadah and offer participants insights and information on how to enhance their own Seder tables. It is open to the public free of charge and all attendees will receive a complimentary Shmurah Matzah and holiday guide.

Westfield Y to Hold ‘Splash Week’ Events

Fall Prevention Lecture Is Planned on April 12 For Lunch and Learn

WESTFIELD — The Westfield Y, located at 220 Clark Street, will hold a Lunch & Learn for the Sixty and Better Set on Wednesday, April 12, at 12: 30 p. m.

Physical therapist Larry Bock from Twin Boro Physical Therapy in Westfield will speak on fall prevention.

Participants will learn what they can do around the house to prevent falls; precautions they need to take and practical exercises to help improve their balance.

Mr. Bock, who has been in practice for 20 years, specializes in orthopedic problems and sports medicine.

All Lunch & Learn programs are free and open to the public. Attendees are asked to bring a bag lunch and dessert to share with about three people. The Y will supply the beverages. To make a reservation, please call (908) 2332700.

Storyteller to Recall Victorian Society For Woman’s Club

WESTFIELD — The Woman’s Club of Westfield will hold its general meeting on Monday, April 10, with actress and storyteller Laurie MacDonnellGaulke presenting a program entitled “From Corsets to Calling Cards: Dress and Decorum in Victorian Society.”

Ms. MacDonnellGaulke, who holds a master’s degree in cultural anthropology, specializes in creating historical portrayals of real people which illustrate how women navigated the rules and etiquette of Victorian society.

The Gillette resident researches diaries, letters and journals wherever possible in order to present her characters in a historically, culturally and socially accurate manner. WESTFIELD — The Westfield Y

has announced a weeklong program of introductory swimming and water safety classes from Monday, April 10, through Friday, April 14.

“Splash Week” classes are designed for individuals aged 6 months to adult and are most appropriate for new or beginner swimmers.

The four, 30minute classes are free for everyone and Y membership is not required.

In addition, the Y will offer a special “My Parent & Me” class for 3to 5yearolds who are hesitant to swim without a trusted adult by their side, as well as a “Try Scuba” class conducted by Ocean Explorers for individuals over age 16 who can swim.

The week will end with a special day of swimming and a safety presentation on April 14 at 11 a. m.

Splash is a national YMCA event designed to introduce the community to swim lessons, pool and beach safety in conjunction with caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Registration will be done on a firstcome, firstserved basis and will continue until all the spaces are filled. A waiting list will also be taken in the event of a cancellation.

Clothing, Toy Sale to Benefit Learning Disabled Children

SCOTCH PLAINS — A Clothing and Toy Sale to benefit the Scotch Plains/ Fanwood Learning Disabilities Association (SP/ F LDA) will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15, from 9 a. m. to 2 p. m. Donations of items are now being accepted.

Learning disabilities may be as simple as speech delays and as involved as autism and autismrelated disorders.

The SP/ F LDA provides support and information services to parents and professionals who interact with learning disabled children.

It also offers parent workshops on how to help children succeed in school and with their peers. The SP/ F LDA has organized social skills workshops for children, as well as support services for parents.

Literature and information regard ing additional special education resources

PANDA Seeks Input For Potential Programs

WESTFIELD — Westfield Municipal Alliance/ PANDA will soon be preparing its next, threeyear application for county funds through the Municipal Alliance Grant Program.

Book Sale to Continue Through Saturday

WESTFIELD — The Annual Book Sale of the Friends of the Westfield Memorial Library will continue today and tomorrow, April 6 and 7, from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m. in the library’s Program Room, 550 East Broad Street in Westfield. Tomorrow is HalfPrice Day.

Bag Day will take place this Saturday, April 8, from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m., when customers may purchase a grocery bag and fill it for $3.

More than 100 volunteers have worked during the past week on the sale. Proceeds from the event benefit the library.
